As a registered Veterinary Internet Pharmacy, we recruiting veterinary surgeons on the current register of the RCVS on a part time basis to sign off veterinary scripts and oversee the regulatory compliance of the pharmacy operation with the VMD and RCVS. Working alongside the Veterinary Pharmacy Manager you will be responsible for staff training to ensure all prescriptions are dispensed efficiently to the requisite standard. The role will also involve giving advice to pet owners and answering queries related to the safe use of medication prescribed by their vet.
This role will offer hybrid working, but scripts will need approved in a timely manner to allow prompt fulfillment of scripts to pet and horse owners. (Some evening and weekend work may be required but would be carried out remotely)
Key Responsibilities:
Developing SOPs:
working with our compliance manager to create simple SOPs which document how the pharmacy operates
Training Staff in SOPs:
working with the pharmacy manager toensure new staff are properly trained prior to commencement of their role and doing refresher training with existing staff.
Validating prescriptions:
checking scripts to ensure dosage and duration of treatment is in line with product SPC and where required, checking with prescribing vet if the dosage seems unusual at first glance.
Overseeing the dispensing of prescriptions:
Working with pharmacy manager to ensure accuracy in fulfilling and dispensing veterinary prescriptions (POM-V) and other veterinary medicines (POM-VPS, NFA-VPS) written by a veterinarian or other authorized prescriber.
Species-specific knowledge:
Possesses in-depth knowledge of how different drugs affect various animal species, taking into account their unique physiology, metabolism, and potential toxicities.
Treatment planning:
Consulting with prescribing vet as required to select the most suitable and cost-effective drug treatments for specific patients, particularly for complex cases.
Client education:
Advises pet owners on how to administer medications correctly, what side effects to watch for, and how to safely store and dispose of drugs.
Regulatory adherence:
Ensures all pharmacy operations comply RCVS and Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) regulations.
Documentation and record-keeping:
Maintains accurate records of prescription fulfillment.
Compliance audits:
Performing or participating in audits to ensure the pharmacy meets legal and best practice standards.
