London Vet Specialists are seeking a Theatre Technician to join their multi-disciplinary referral centre in Hammersmith, London. Previous experience in a veterinary setting is advantageous but not essential, though a strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation is expected. This role may be suited to a Patient Care Assistant with a particular interest in surgery, or an experienced sterile supplies technician in a healthcare facility.

Your role and responsibilities

The Theatre Technician will work collaboratively with the Head of Nursing Services (HoNS), Lead Nurses and Clinicians across the hospital to ensure the efficient delivery of outstanding surgical care within the soft tissue, orthopaedic, ophthalmic & neurosurgery services. Your responsibilities will include the handling, maintenance & care of surgical instrumentation & equipment, surgical theatre and patient preparation, theatre circulating & assistance, upholding a high standard of hospital hygiene, patient care, accurate record keeping & effective communication and teamwork. You will work enthusiastically with the nursing team to help maintain a happy and efficient working environment.



As a focused role, your work will be prioritised within the surgical theatres and sterilisation facility, though assistance with basic patient care may also be required of the role, dependent on the experience of the successful candidate and where further training will be provided. Previous veterinary experience is not essential, though a strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation in healthcare is expected.

Key Responsibilities

Provision of a high and sustainable quality of patient care, primarily within the soft tissue, orthopaedic, ophthalmic & neurosurgery services. Clean, pack and sterilise surgical instruments, kits and sterile supplies. Theatre maintenance including preparation and cleaning between procedures Assist with patient preparation and surgical team support under the direction of the clinicians and RVNs. Circulate in theatre for surgical procedures to provide assistance to the surgery team. Coordinate maintenance of sterilisation equipment, to include autoclaves, EO steriliser, ultrasonic baths & endoscope washer. Provide inpatient care under the direction of the clinicians and nursing team. Demonstrate the ability to provide a high standard of hospital hygiene, to include cleaning and disinfection in all areas and assisting with hospital laundry. Assist with stock management, such as processing deliveries, stock rotation, quarterly stock takes and co-ordinating orders with the pharmacy & purchasing assistant. Use Halo reporting to reflect on incidents or near misses where patient care can be improved. As a cat-friendly clinic, you will support the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) cat-friendly standards across the hospital. As a dog-friendly clinic, you will support the Dogs Trust and British Veterinary Behaviour Association (BVBA) dog-friendly standards across the hospital.
