The Viability Nurse is responsible for providing expert assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of wound care and skin integrity for clients/residents/patients. The role supports frontline staff with advanced clinical knowledge, promotes safe evidence-based practice, and contributes to improved patient outcomes related to pressure injuries, chronic wounds, surgical wounds, and skin conditions.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
Conduct comprehensive wound and skin assessments utilizing validated tools and classification systems
Develop individualized wound management plans based on evidence-based practice
Provide advanced wound care interventions including selection of dressings, debridement where within scope, off-loading strategies, and adjunct therapies
Monitor wound progress and document according to organizational standards
Identify and respond to signs of infection and deterioration
Promote early identification and prevention of pressure injuries
Support nutritional, continence, and mobility strategies linked to wound healing
Education & Support
Mentor and educate nursing staff, caregivers, and allied health on wound prevention and care
Deliver in-service education and competency development
Provide patient and family education to enhance self-care capability
Consultation & Collaboration
Act as a clinical resource on wound management across the care team
Work closely with physicians, dietitians, podiatrists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists
Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews and discharge planning
Qualifications & Requirements
Registered Nurse with current, unrestricted licensure
Post-graduate certificate or training in wound care / tissue viability (or working toward qualification)
Minimum 2-3 years acute, community, or aged care nursing experience
Strong knowledge of:
Wound healing physiology
Pressure injury prevention strategies
Advanced wound products and technologies
Pain, nutrition, diabetes, and vascular considerations
Excellent communication, leadership, and documentation skills
Ability to work independently and provide consultancy to teams
