Job Title: Visiting Music Teacher (VMT) Guitar (classical/acoustic/electric/ukulele)
Hours of Work: Circa 6 hours per week (as a minimum upon commencement with potential for more hours) term time only engaged on a self-employed basis
Reports to: Director of Music
The Headmaster and CEO of Eltham College Family of Schools, with the Head of Blackheath Prep, seek to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic and engaging Guitar Teacher to join our team of self-employed Visiting Music Teachers. In the first instance, the role will be to teach pupils on a one-to-one private basis. In the future, this could develop to include rehearsals directing an ensemble. You should be willing to teach pupils from age 6 to 11 years old.
They will be flexible and pro-active in their approach, have good communication skills, and provide high calibre lessons for pupils, enabling them to perform musically to the high standards expected by the School and to achieve their full potential in music examinations and concert performances as appropriate, as well as enjoying, and feeling motivated by, their musical journey. This will be achieved primarily through one-to-one lessons, but may include assistance with duets/trios, concerts, and performance coaching as required. Our VMTs are responsible for organising their own teaching timetable, but are supported by the Music Administrator where necessary.
Music is a defining feature of Blackheath Prep, part of the Eltham College Family of Schools and considerable time, resource, support and encouragement is given to the musical life of the school. All children (Nursery to Year 6) have weekly class music lessons with a specialist teacher. In Years 3 & 4, children participate in the school's Strings and Wind and Brass Schemes and are given the opportunity to learn an instrument, fully funded by the school. Almost 80% of children learn one instrument with many learning more.
There is a thriving co-curricular programme, and concerts are held regularly throughout the school year. Ensembles and Choirs vary from year-to-year according to the musical skills and needs of the cohort. Currently, the school has numerous choirs, string, wind, brass and percussion ensembles, flute choir and jazz club.
The Music Department is hosted in a purpose-built Music Suite, with a classroom and teaching rooms for peripatetic music lessons.
Application closing date: 9am on Wednesday 24 September 2025
Interviews to take place Wednesday 1 October 2025
Suitable candidates may be interviewed before the closing date and Eltham College Family of Schools reserves the right to withdraw the position if an early appointment is made.
We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that match the social and cultural diversity of our student intake. Candidates will be assessed against relevant criteria only (i.e. skills, qualifications, abilities, experience).
Eltham College Family of Schools is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants undergo enhanced child protection screening relevant to the post, including checks with past employers and the DBS.
