Role Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and adaptable
Vocational Teacher
to deliver a range of practical, skills-based subjects to secondary-aged students (13-18). This role is ideal for someone with a passion for hands-on learning, alternative education, and making a meaningful impact on the lives of young people--particularly those with additional needs such as SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) challenges or SEND.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Curriculum Delivery
Plan and deliver engaging vocational lessons in one or more subject areas such as construction, health and social care, horticulture, personal training, or business (based on the teacher's skill set).
Deliver accredited courses where applicable (e.g., BTEC, NCFE, City & Guilds, Functional Skills).
Support students in developing employability, life skills, and work-related competencies.
Use creative approaches to engage learners and tailor teaching to individual needs, abilities, and interests.
Learner Engagement & Support
Build positive relationships with students, many of whom may require high levels of pastoral care and behavioural support.
Promote resilience, responsibility, and practical problem-solving through real-world learning contexts.
Provide one-to-one and small group support where appropriate to boost engagement and confidence.
Collaboration & Contribution
Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, SENCO, and the wider staff team to support student progress and welfare.
Contribute to the development of vocational programmes and school enrichment activities.
Support students in preparing for next steps, including college applications, apprenticeships, or work placements.
Essential Criteria
Relevant teaching qualification (e.g., QTS, QTLS, or vocational teaching/training certification).
Experience teaching or delivering vocational or practical subjects to young people.
Excellent classroom management and relationship-building skills.
Ability to adapt teaching for students with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
Strong commitment to inclusive, student-centred education.
Desirable Criteria
Industry experience in a vocational field (e.g., construction, catering, automotive, health & social care, etc.).
Experience working in alternative provision, PRUs, or specialist settings.
Knowledge of assessment frameworks for vocational qualifications (e.g., NCFE, BTEC, ASDAN).
Training in trauma-informed or therapeutic approaches.
