: Community Transport / Volunteer Services / SEN Support

: Northampton, Kettering, Wellingborough, Corby and surrounding areas.
Local communities - covering health services, homes, schools, and wellbeing venues
Job Purpose
To provide safe, reliable, and compassionate
door-to-door transport
for individuals in the community--including patients, children with special educational needs (SEN), and socially isolated adults--enabling them to access medical appointments, educational settings, and wellbeing services. This vital volunteer role enhances accessibility, independence, and community cohesion.
Key Responsibilities
1. Passenger Transport Duties
Provide transport for individuals attending:
Medical appointments
(GP, hospitals, clinics)
Social prescribing and wellbeing activities
Mental health groups
Fitness or social groups
Community centres or outreach events
Home-to-School travel
Support children and young people with
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
Ensure punctual and safe pickup/drop-off from home and educational settings
2. Passenger Care and Safety
Assist passengers with getting in and out of the vehicle if needed
Secure wheelchairs or assistive devices safely when applicable
Provide reassurance and a friendly presence throughout the journey
Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality guidelines always
Identify and report any concerns about passengers' wellbeing
3. Vehicle Use & Recordkeeping
Use your own
insured and roadworthy vehicle
Maintain cleanliness and a welcoming environment inside the vehicle
4. Communication and Coordination
Liaise with the transport or volunteer coordinator regarding journey schedules
Provide updates about availability or changes in passenger needs
Represent the organization positively within the community
Reimbursement
Mileage reimbursement is provided from 50p per mile
(in accordance with HMRC or organizational volunteer guidelines)
Essential Skills and Qualities
A
valid UK driving licence
Access to a suitable and insured vehicle (for business or volunteer use)
Punctual, reliable, and responsible
Friendly, calm, and patient, especially with vulnerable passengers or SEN children
Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
Willingness to undergo a
DBS check
and any required training (e.g., safeguarding or manual handling)
Desirable
Previous experience with:
SEN support
Elderly or vulnerable adults
Patient transport or school transport
Familiarity with local roads and transport routes
Time Commitment
