This role is 37 hours per week over 4 days (Tuesday - Friday). Normal daily working hours in this post will be 07.00 - 16.45.



About the role




An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Rochdale Council as a Class 2 HGV Waste Collection Driver, working within the Waste and Recycling Department.


To ensure that an effective and efficient waste collection service is delivered through active use of our in-cab technology, to work as part of a team or through your own initiative and to manage customer expectations, requests and complaints in line with council policy and procedures.


The successful candidate will be based at our Green Lane Depot in Heywood and will have the opportunity to be part of a front-line team providing a key service to the residents of Rochdale.


You will be required to work with other team members across various routes which can change daily.


You will need to be customer focused, polite and courteous to all customers, members of staff and other members of the public you encounter.

What will you be doing?




As a professional HGV driver, the successful candidate must take responsibility for their vehicle, crew and ensure we remain compliant with duties/responsibilities for health and safety, transport legislation, driving regulations, and any restrictions associated with the authority's operator's license.


You will be responsible for collection of all waste streams, ensuring we always provide our residents the best possible service.


Ensuring that all routes, missed bins and assisted collections are completed as scheduled.


To drive in a safe manner in line with transport legislation, health and safety and council procedures.


There will also be an element of vehicle cleaning and light maintenance as we always ensure our vehicles are in excellent condition.


To ensure that spillages are removed from the highway as a result of our collections.


Complete daily compliance and defect check and ensuring all required is completed and handed in as per council procedure.


Wear the appropriate uniform and protective clothing.


To report all accidents/incidents and near misses as they occur.


To be customer focused when dealing with members of the public and service users when answering their queries or offering assistance.

About you




You must hold a current and in date Class 2 HGV licence and current driver card (CPC)


You should enjoy working outside and be physically fit as the role can be very demanding


To be a team player as well as working well under your own initiative.


You should have a flexible approach to work with a positive attitude with a "can do" attitude and be willing to learn and take responsibility as you develop.
