The post is 10 hours per week; 3.00pm to 8.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Holiday Entitlement:

Full time employees are entitled to 5.6 weeks holiday per year. Part-time and Sessional employees are entitled to holidays on a pro rata basis.

Abbey College Manchester



Abbey College Manchester was founded in 1990 and over the past thirty plus has become one of the leading providers of independent sixth form education in Greater Manchester. There are normally about 200-220 students in the college. Within this around 30% are from the Manchester area with the remainder coming from 40 different countries across Europe; Africa; Asia and the Americas.

We are a dynamic, exciting college, situated in the heart of Manchester providing high quality, flexible A Level, International Foundation and GCSE programmes. We have recently introduced two unique programmes to complement our offering; these being the Combined Studies Programme and the Academic Studies with Football, Tennis or Cycling Training Programme. Our modern building provides an environment conducive to study and in our small classes each student can develop their individual aptitudes aided by a strong system of tutorial guidance.

Boarding Accommodation



Abbey College Manchester has approximately 60 students living in our boarding accommodation (Clydesdale House) which is a 5-10 minute walk from the main college building. The students live in clusters over four floors at Clydesdale House which are accessed only by Abbey College Manchester students and boarding staff.

Overview of the role



The role of the Weekend Chef is to provide the evening meal for the boarding students in Clydesdale. The normal days of working are Saturday to Sunday, 3.00pm to 8.00pm.

Key responsibilities



1. Assist in establishing a varied menu on a 3-4 week rotation, including daily vegetarian options, and display this menu for students

2. Provide a menu that reflects the culinary tastes of our students

3. Assist in the preparation of sandwiches/salad/pasta that form part of our students' lunches.

4. To adhere to the Safeguarding responsibilities as indicated by Boarding National Minimum Standards 2022.

5. Ensure correct ingredients ordered/purchased in accordance with the menu from trusted outlets

6. Highlight any potential allergens/intolerances within the food to students via information board

7. Check food condition and best before dates daily and ensure any "bad" food is disposed of correctly

8. Ensure stock rotation so oldest food used first and menu to incorporate this

9. Check fridge temperature as per guidelines

10. Check freezer temperature as per guidelines

11. Ensure kitchen area clean prior to commencing food preparation (daily)

12. Prepare all food for the menu

13. Ensure no cross contamination of food types - separate boards for meat, bread and vegetables

14. Ensure work surfaces and equipment is cleaned throughout preparation and serving

15. Ensure food core temperature is checked and maintained to guidelines throughout serving period

16. Ensure kitchen area/oven cleaned after food service

17. Liaise with Almero to ensure oven and kitchen thoroughly cleaned on regular basis

18. Liaise with Assistant Principal and notify immediately of any issues or concerns and ensure best practice is adhered to by all Houseparents when using the kitchen area.

Skills Required



Technical Skills



Hygiene certificate level 2 or higher Experience of cooking in this type of environment i.e. a school canteen or equivalent

Personal Skills and Qualifications



High levels of personal and professional integrity Personal warmth, good rapport with students and colleagues Ability to cook nutritious food and provide an interesting, appropriate menu Honesty and integrity Approachability and flexibility are key to this role Be suitable to work with young people (DBS clearance)
