Working (hands On) Project Manager

Cambridge, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

(Construction - Cambridge / Peterborough / Bedford Region)

About the Role

We're a small but ambitious construction company delivering high-quality residential and commercial projects in the 50k-500k+ range. We're now looking for a Working Project Manager -- someone who thrives on ownership, takes pride in well-run sites, and enjoys balancing boots-on-the-ground leadership with strategic planning from the office (or home).

This role is approximately 50% site-based, 50% office/home-based, and of that site time, some hands-on involvement is expected -- especially in early stages, setting out, solving problems, or mentoring team members.

This is a great opportunity for someone with site management experience ready to take the next step into broader project delivery -- or an established project manager who still enjoys rolling their sleeves up when needed.

What You'll Be Doing - A Day in the Life

Here's how a typical day or week might look:
- 08:00 - Site visit #1: Check progress, set the day's agenda with trades, jump in hands-on if needed (e.g., setting out or helping with a detail that's holding others up).
- 10:30 - Drive to second site: Quick check-in with subcontractors, raise any snagging or supply issues.
- 11:30 - Builders' merchant stop-off: Pick up urgently needed materials or make sure deliveries are on track.
- 12:00 - Lunch in the van or home office: Catch up on BuilderTrend or Excel-based tracker updates, supplier emails, and a quick client call.
- 12:45 - Client site meeting: Walk the job with the client, go over finishes, variations or upcoming milestones.
- 15:00 - Planning session at home/office: Order materials for next week, review programme, cost-up a variation, or write up site diary notes.
- 16:00 - Teams call with directors: Discuss progress across all live jobs and upcoming procurement.

Every day is different -- but always with a clear sense of ownership, responsibility, and progress.

Why This Role? Why Now?

We're growing steadily and want someone who can grow with us. For the right person, this role offers a genuine pathway to senior leadership or director level as the company expands.

You'll work directly with the company directors and play a key part in shaping how we deliver projects, manage our team, and continue building our reputation for quality and service.

What We're Looking For

Experience as a site manager, assistant project manager, or working foreperson looking to step up.

Confident in managing 4-6 live projects at various stages.

Trade background (carpentry, general building, etc.) strongly preferred.

Skilled at juggling time between practical site leadership and desk-based planning.

Comfortable with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and construction management software.

Clear communicator who takes pride in quality, problem solving, and ownership.

Full UK driving licence and based within reach of Cambridge / Bedford / Peterborough area.

What We Offer

Competitive salary (based on experience)

Company vehicle (following probation)

Hybrid working - site and home-based mix

Real scope to shape the role and the business as we grow

Supportive, no-nonsense working culture

Interested?

If this sounds like a good fit -- or a great next step -- we'd love to hear from you. We're open to conversations with both experienced Project Managers and ambitious Site Managers ready to take the lead.
