About Blyth Tall Ship
Blyth Tall Ship is a maritime heritage charity dedicated to providing on site training in woodworking, preserving traditional boatbuilding skills, and engaging the community through hands-on learning. Operating in a unique dockside environment, we are a volunteer-driven organisation with active boatbuilding and restoration projects on site.
Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Workshop Operative to support our boatbuilding, maintenance, and workshop activities. This is a hands-on role working with wood and traditional materials, contributing directly to the construction, repair, and upkeep of vessels and associated structures. The postholder will also support training and volunteer activity within the workshop environment.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out woodworking and engineering tasks related to boatbuilding, restoration, and repair
Assist in the construction and maintenance of wooden boats and maritime structures
Operate workshop tools and machinery safely and effectively
Support and guide volunteers, trainees, and learners during workshop activities
Help maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised workshop environment
Assist with preparation of materials and components for projects
Follow health and safety procedures at all times
Contribute to the charitable and educational aims of Blyth Tall Ship
Essential Skills and Experience
Minimum of NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in Woodworking, Carpentry, Joinery, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Strong practical woodworking skills (essential), experienced in bench work
Experience using hand and power tools safely
Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
Good communication skills and a positive, practical attitude
Commitment to working in a community-focused environment
Desirable Skills and Experience
Training or teaching background with training certificates, or experience supporting learners or volunteers
Experience in boatbuilding, marine carpentry, or heritage craft work
Interest in maritime heritage or traditional skills
First Aid or Health & Safety certification
