The Yard Manager is responsible for the efficient, safe and organised running of the company's yard operations. This includes overseeing the loading and unloading of plant and equipment, managing yard staff, ensuring all hire assets are maintained, cleaned, and prepared for hire and coordinating closely with the transport and workshop teams to ensure smooth daily operations.
The role requires strong leadership, attention to detail and a proactive approach to health and safety compliance. The yard manager plays a key part in maintaining the company's reputation for reliability and professionalism by ensuring all machinery and equipment are well presented, securely stored and ready for immediate deployment to customers.
Key objective include but not limited to maintaining a tidy and compliant yard environment, efficient turnaround of plant and tools, accurate stock control and effective communication between the yard and drivers.
Mon - Friday 7am to 5pm
Every other Saturday 8am to 12pm
Duties
Supervise and coordinate all yard activities to ensure efficient daily operations.
Allocate tasks and oversee the work of yard staff, ensuring standards are met.
Inspect, clean and prepare plant and equipment for hire.
Completing PDI's.
Check retuned machinery for damage or faults and report findings to the workshop.
Coordinate with third-party logistics (3PL) providers to ensure timely delivery of goods.
Ensure correct loading and unloading of vehicles, following all safety procedures.
Maintain accurate records of inventory levels and manage stock control effectively.
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations within the yard environment.
Operate forklifts as necessary for loading and unloading materials.
Keep the yard, storage areas and wash bay clean and tidy and well organised.
Communicate effectively with transport and office teams to coordinate deliveries and collections.
Ensure all plant, tools and vehicles are stored securely at the end of each day.
Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the yard and facilities when required.
Support the induction and training of new yard staff.
Requirements
Previous experience in a yard, plant hire or construction environment (management or supervisory level preferred).
Strong Knowledge of plant and equipment, including loading, unloading and storage procedures.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a small team.
Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
Good communication and teamwork abilities across the yard, transport, office and staff.
Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
Sound understanding of health and safety regulations and practical application on site.
Ability to prioritise workload and work under pressure workload and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
Basic Computer skills for logging equipment movements and completing yard documentation.
Full UK driving licence essential.
