UKAEA's Year in Industry placements provide students with the opportunity to work on real engineering projects, gaining practical skills and industry knowledge before returning to university to complete their degree.

  • Learn from experienced engineers, supporting your academic studies while developing skills for your future engineering career.
  • Develop new technical and professional skills and gain valuable real-world engineering experience.
  • Gain insight into the wide range of engineering roles and projects across UKAEA.
  • Work on a variety of projects, with typical assessment durations ranging from two weeks to three months.
  • Contribute to projects supporting JET Decommissioning and Repurposing, MAST-U, and Fusion Futures.
  • Support design and equipment qualification activities within the Engineering Qualification team across UKAEA programmes.
  • Apply a range of analysis methods, including static, dynamic, thermal, structural, fluid, and electromagnetic analyses.
  • Use industry-standard simulation tools, including ANSYS and other specialist software.
  • Work on projects such as MAST-U upgrades, STEP fusion power plant concept design, and JET tokamak decommissioning.
Qualifications
  • Studying towards a degree in Science or Engineering
  • Confident with all Microsoft applications including Excel, Word and Powerpoint
  • Driven, with a strong appetite to learn and take on new challenges
  • Able to collaborate effectively and communicate clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Well organised and adaptable with the ability to plan and prioritise workload
