Job Description

We are seeking a qualified and culturally aware

Yiddish Language Interpreter

to support individuals with limited English proficiency by providing accurate, confidential, and impartial interpretation between

Yiddish and English

. The successful candidate will work across a range of settings, including healthcare, legal, community, education, and social services, ensuring communication is effective and respectful at all times.

Main Responsibilities:



Interpret accurately and fluently between Yiddish and English, maintaining the original meaning, tone, and style of speech. Provide consecutive and/or simultaneous interpretation during face-to-face meetings, telephone calls, and video conferences. Adhere to professional codes of practice, including confidentiality, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity. Prepare for assignments by researching specialised terminology relevant to the context (e.g. medical, legal, social care). Assist with sight translation of short written documents where necessary. Build trust with clients and professionals by demonstrating reliability, respect, and understanding of cultural contexts. Maintain accurate records of interpreting sessions in accordance with organisational policies.

Person Specification:



Essential:



Fluency in

Yiddish and English

, both spoken and written. Proven experience as a professional interpreter, preferably within public sector services (e.g. NHS, local authority, legal services). Understanding of Yiddish-speaking communities, including cultural and regional variations. Excellent interpersonal, listening, and communication skills. Ability to work independently and remain composed under pressure. Awareness of and adherence to professional interpreting ethics and confidentiality standards.

Desirable:



Interpreting qualification (e.g.

Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting

,

DPSI

, or equivalent). Membership with a professional body (e.g.

NRPSI

,

CIoL

,

ITI

). Experience in healthcare, legal, or community-based interpretation.

Pay: 15.00-20.00 per hour
