Job Description

The Bank Youth Project is a centre for young people, aged 9-19, who live in and around Ashburton in South Devon. We are recruiting a Youth Support Worker to assist our Youth Work team.

Hours

: 3 hours per week on a Tuesday evening (6.00 - 9.00pm), and to provide cover at other sessions when required, as agreed between Lead Youth Support Worker and post holder. The role is to work as part of a team of paid staff and volunteers assisting in providing and facilitating activities, mentoring young people, leading or assisting with the leadership of projects and promoting the values and objectives of BYP. The successful candidate will be able to support young people's social, emotional, physical and mental well being in their transition from dependence to independence. BYP's mission is to empower and support young people to improve their life opportunities by helping them grow as individuals and as members of the community. Our aim is to engage them in purposeful activity in a safe space they can call their own, where they can relax, be creative, have fun, make friends, develop their interests and skills, talk and discuss, increase self-awareness, take on responsibility, seek advice and support, and increase their understanding of the community around them and their involvement in it. A non-judgemental approach with awareness and respect for safeguarding, inclusivity and confidentiality is essential. We offer on-going training and support.

Key tasks

Participate in and support the development and running of all aspects of an effective and engaging programme of club nights and activities at BYP's premises and elsewhere as required for occasional off-site activities Support the full and active participation of BYP members in the programme and services offered, including one-to-one support (on issues such as sexual health, mental health, drugs and alcohol, bullying, money and employment, education, social media and more) Ensure that BYP members have an opportunity to influence the planning, delivery, monitoring, evaluation and review of BYP's programmes and services Assist the Lead Youth Support Worker in ensuring that the health & safety, equal opportunities, child protection and other BYP policies and procedures are observed and implemented Assist the Lead Youth Support Worker in ensuring that all outcomes, indicators and activities included in the BYP Project Management Plan are achieved Attend regular supervision sessions, team meetings and training programmes and undergo DBS and other necessary checks as required by the Lead Youth Support Worker and the BYP Management Committee. Essential skills and experience: the ability to contact, engage with and motivate young people the ability to communicate effectively with individual young people and with groups of young people from all backgrounds the ability to work as part of a team of paid staff and volunteers the ability to work to your own initiative good written, verbal and numerical communication skills good attention to detail the ability to cope in sometimes stressful situations and to work well under pressure of time and the demands of others for sometimes immediate decisions and action. experience of working with young people, preferably in a youth work setting an understanding of and empathy with issues facing young people (ideally with some experience of offering information and guidance on topics such as sexual and mental health, drugs and alcohol, bullying, etc) an understanding of equal opportunities and an appreciation of inclusion and diversity a commitment to safeguarding. Desirable qualifications, skills and experience: a youth work qualification, preferably to a minimum of NVQ Level 2 or equivalent GCSE's or equivalent qualifications in English and Maths a qualification in an activity or activities relevant to the youth work curriculum previous training in health and safety, first aid, sexual health and/or child protection an understanding of health, safety and welfare issues, preferably in a youth work setting. an understanding of child protection issues experience of observing and implementing policies, plans and procedures, preferably in a youth work setting experience of advice, information, support and development work for young people experience of community outreach, promotion and fundraising work.
