Job Description

Portishead Youth & Community Centre (PYCC) has been providing positive activities, support and a safe and welcoming environment for local people since 1966. Youth Work has always been integral to our organisation and providing high quality, accessible and engaging sessions led by qualified and experienced Youth Workers for children and young people aged 8-30 (including those with SEND) to attend and enjoy, is vital to our mission and values.

Since 2012, Portishead Youth & Community Centre has been an independent company limited by guarantee and registered charity, funded through a range of income sources including grants, donations and self-generated income. We currently deliver 15 sessions a week for children and young people, including open access youth club sessions, projects, SEND youth club provision, ASDAN Short Courses, drop-in sessions and detached sessions in the local community.

The Youth Work and Engagement Lead will be responsible for developing, delivering, maintaining and evaluating our youth work offer, ensuring our provision is relevant, fun, engaging and a recognised source of support and guidance for young people as they transition through adolescence, and into adulthood.

The Youth Work and Engagement Lead will take a central role in leading and delivering youth and community engagement programmes within the Centre and the local community. The post holder will work directly with young people, staff, and community partners to design and deliver inclusive, inspiring activities that promote personal development, wellbeing, and youth participation.

This role will also champion youth voice and leadership, ensuring that young people are actively involved in shaping the youth work offer and leading positive change in the local community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Youth Work and Programme Delivery



Plan, lead, and deliver a varied programme of youth sessions, workshops, trips, holiday activities and detached youth work sessions for young people aged 8-30. Create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where young people feel valued, respected, and supported. Build strong relationships with young people and support their personal, social, physical and emotional development. Provide guidance and signposting to help young people to access further opportunities, education, or support services. Encourage and enable young people to design sessions and projects, including creative, sports, social action, trips and holiday activities that will appeal to them and their peers.

2. Engagement and Participation



Develop trusting and positive relationships with young people through delivery of youth activities that promote participation and a sense of ownership of the Centre by young people. Work with the Youth Work team to develop youth voice and participation initiatives, such as a Youth Planning Committee and consultation sessions with local young people. Develop and implement strategies to engage young people who may be underrepresented or face barriers to participation. Support young people to take active roles in volunteering and leadership. Promote PYCC's activities through detached youth work, schools, digital channels, and community partnerships.

3. Community and Partnership Working



Build and maintain strong relationships and our professional reputation with local secondary and primary schools, community groups, Portishead policing team and partner organisations. Represent PYCC at local meetings, events, and networks. Collaborate with partners to expand opportunities for young people and families. Support community events and intergenerational projects that bring people together and strengthen local connections.

4. Leadership and Team Support



Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision for Youth Work staff and volunteers. Cover of provision delivery where required to ensure a consistent and professional service (e.g., cover for staff annual leave or sickness). Mentor and develop team members to ensure high-quality delivery and professional growth. Contribute to planning, development, and evaluation of Centre-wide youth and community activities and provision. Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Safeguarding



Keep accurate records of attendance, outcomes, and impact in line with PYCC and funder requirements. Collect and use feedback to evaluate programmes and inform future planning. Ensure all activities comply with safeguarding, health and safety, and equality policies. Promote the wellbeing and safeguarding of all young people, maintaining professional boundaries at all times.
Job Types: Part-time, Permanent

Pay: 26,657.28 per year

Expected hours: 32 per week
