To provide individualised, nurturing, and consistent support to a child in the Early Years Foundation Stage who is undergoing the SEND assessment process. The role focuses on promoting the child's communication, social interaction, learning, play, and independence in line with their individual support plan, while fostering inclusion within the class/school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide 1:1 support for the child across the daily routine, both in structured activities and free play.
Implement strategies recommended by the SENCo, therapists, and external professionals (e.g. speech and language therapy, occupational therapy).
Adapt activities and resources to ensure accessibility and engagement, in line with the child's individual targets/learning support plan.
Use supportive communication strategies (e.g. visual timetables, or other agreed tools).
Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation, following agreed behaviour support strategies.
Support the development of self-care skills (e.g. toileting, eating, dressing) with sensitivity and encouragement.
Encourage the child's interaction with peers, promoting inclusion and social development.
Monitor, record, and provide feedback on the child's progress to staff.
Work collaboratively with teachers, Early Years practitioners, and external professionals.
Ensure the child's safety and well-being, following safeguarding and health & safety procedures.
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience of working with young children in an educational, childcare, or support setting.
Understanding of Early Years development, SEND code of Practice and a commitment to inclusive practice.
Patient, caring, and consistent approach.
Ability to adapt communication and teaching styles to meet individual needs.
Strong observational and record-keeping skills.
Good communication skills with both children and adults.
Ability to support with nappy changing and toilet training.
A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable:
Relevant qualification in childcare/education (e.g. NVQ Level 2 or 3, CACHE, Early Years Educator, or equivalent).
Experience or training in autism strategies.
