I am a 16-year-old boy who has a diagnosis of a life limiting neurodegenerative disease Ataxia-telangiectasia (AT) and reside in the Merthyr area with my mother and two younger sisters. I display most of the symptoms of AT including difficulty walking and poor balance, involuntary jerking movements, muscle twitching, slurred speech and poor growth. I am able to communicate verbally however my speech can become slurred and I have access to a communicate device to support me when needed.
Due to my increased mobility I need support with transitions and am unable to walk without support and usually use my wheelchair. I am able to toilet independently but will need assistance with transferring on and off the toilet to ensure my safety and risk of falling and hurting myself. I have a specialist diet due as I have difficulty gaining weight and swallowing which is another symptom of my condition.
I attend greenfield specialist school and have a good group of friends. I enjoy watching my favourite football team Liverpool, playing on my X-box and love music particularly rap music and Ed Sheeran.
I have a good sense of humour and want to access social activities, I will need two PA's to ensure my safety with transitions and transfers from my wheelchair etc.
I do not display any challenging behaviours but can become frustrated when people do not understand what I am trying to say. In this situation it is best to provide me with the time to communicate my needs more clearly, rather than trying to communicate for me.
