Strategic Support Officer - Strategic Road Network Division




Are you looking for a role where you can make a real impact on Wales' transport infrastructure? We're offering an exciting opportunity to join the Strategic Road Network (SRN) Division at the heart of Welsh Government.


The SRN is one of Wales' most critical infrastructure assets, valued at approximately 21 billion. Although it represents just 5% of the total road length in Wales, it carries a third of all traffic and 93% of road freight--playing a vital role in supporting economic growth, regional connectivity, public safety, and environmental sustainability.

About the Role




As Strategic Support Officer, you'll work closely with the Deputy Director of the Division, providing high-level support across a wide range of responsibilities. The Deputy Director oversees a Division of around 70 staff and manages a capital budget of 200 million and a revenue budget of 120 million annually.


You'll be the first point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including senior Welsh Government officials, Local Authorities, National Highways, the Department for Transport, contractors, consultants, and members of the public. You'll also support wider divisional activity, including finance, third-party claims, and land management.

Person specification




As Strategic Support Officer, you'll provide direct support to the Deputy Director and wider Division. Your responsibilities will include:

Executive Support



Managing the Deputy Director's diary and inbox independently Responding to emails and ensuring timely, appropriate delegation Coordinating communications with internal and external stakeholders

Operational & Administrative Duties



Maintaining filing systems and records for key divisional areas Supporting governance processes including Freedom of Information (FoI) requests and Ministerial advice Minute-taking for meetings and committees Keeping divisional organograms and resource records up to date

Cross-Divisional Collaboration



Working closely with engineers, trunk road authorities, consultants, and contractors Assisting teams across the Division during busy periods Coordinating corporate returns, audits, and committee submissions

Event & Recruitment Support



Helping plan and coordinate large internal and external events Providing administrative support for recruitment, including paperwork coordination
