Founded in 1883, Stockport County are one of the country's longest established football clubs. Initially formed as Heaton Norris Rovers, the Club officially became Stockport County in 1890 after the County Borough of Stockport and have been based at Edgeley Park since 1902.
The team currently competes in Sky Bet League One, the third tier of the English Football League, after winning the 2023-24 Sky Bet League Two title.
Role Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic
Sports Therapist
to join our
Academy
team. The Academy Lead Sports Therapist (U13 & U14) is responsible for delivering high-quality medical care, injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation to the club's U13 and U14 academy squads. The role involves matchday and training support, injury management, and collaboration with the wider medical and coaching teams to optimise player health and performance. Based primarily at Stockport Sports Village, the position requires flexibility to work across multiple sites, including evenings and weekends.
Key Responsibilities
Match Day cover (home / away / tour) for the Academy U13 team and rota cover for the U14 team throughout the season
Match day warm up routines before and during the games
To comply with Emergency Action Plans across all playing venues
To lead and co-ordinate, with external support where necessary, the assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions related to players within the Academy U13 and U14 squads and the implementation of appropriate treatment and rehabilitation strategies.
Pre training management of players including strapping and taping, and administration of treatment as required.
Close liaison with Academy medical staff and if required Club Doctor, Sports Scientists, and other members of the multi- disciplinary team to optimise player medical care and performance.
Delivery of individual and squad-based injury prevention programmes based on screening, past medical history and injury trends.
Implement return to play (RTP) protocols for injured Academy players.
The examination and assessment of all new U13/U14 players prior to signing for the club.
Implementing strategies to maximise player performance on the football field from a medical perspective.
Reporting of all injuries to the Academy Head of Medical and coaching staff. Providing weekly updates on all player's rehabilitation progress across the U13/14 squads
Arrange consultations with medical personnel and any relevant investigation related to an injury.
Be involved in clinical governance and maintain professional registration.
To ensure the FA Anti-Doping regulations are always adhered to.
To ensure all medical supplies and equipment are fully stocked, replenished, and secured as required.
Contribute to the education of placement students working within the Academy Medical Department.
To manage the appropriate usage of medical consumables and equipment to ensure the department stays within budget
To assist the Academy Head of Medical and Head of Operations with the administration of the Medical Care Scheme.
Essential
Bachelor's degree in Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy
Valid ITMMiF or ATMMiF qualification
Valid IFAS qualification
Valid professional indemnity insurance
Minimum 3 years' experience in elite sports, including injury diagnosis, treatment, and rehab
Experience in pitch-side medical care and emergency sports trauma
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Organised, with good administrative and IT skills
Knowledge of anti-doping and football medical regulations
Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
Professional, discreet, and able to build relationships with players and staff
Team player with a flexible and committed attitude
Enhanced DBS check required
Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel as needed
Desirable
Experience working with youth players (U13-U14)
Previous work in a football academy setting
Experience supervising students or interns
Involvement in research or development in injury prevention
Familiarity with managing medical supplies and budgets
Knowledge of clinical governance procedures
Experience in medical scheme administration
Comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
