Mastercopy is a long-established North East business specialising in copiers, print, IT services and document management solutions for organisations across the UK.
We're a growing SME with a hands-on leadership team, a loyal customer base and a strong focus on service, reliability and good governance.
As we continue to grow, we're looking for an experienced Accountant to take ownership of our day-to-day finance, accounts and payroll function and help keep the numbers as organised as the documents we manage for our clients.
Role overview
This is a standalone, end-to-end accounting role where you'll be responsible for the day-to-day bookkeeping, month-end accounts, payroll and statutory reporting for Mastercopy.
You'll look after everything from sales and purchase ledgers through to month-end reporting and working with our external accountants at year-end.
It's a great opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the business, understands the realities of SME life, and wants a role where your work directly supports decision-making rather than disappearing into a shared service centre.
Chartered or part-qualified accountant status (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) is preferred but not mandatory. Strong, proven experience in an all-round accounts role is just as important.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Take ownership of day-to-day bookkeeping, including all double-entry postings into Sage.
Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations.
Manage accounts payable: processing purchase invoices, matching to purchase orders, reconciling supplier statements and preparing payment runs.
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for all company accounts and investigate any discrepancies.
Prepare monthly management accounts to trial balance level, with clear, concise commentary on variances where required.
Support budgeting and cashflow forecasting to give management visibility of future commitments and performance.
Process the monthly payroll for the business, including starters, leavers, statutory payments and pension contributions, and submit all required returns (e.g. RTI).
Prepare and submit VAT returns and keep up to date with VAT rules relevant to the business.
Liaise with our external accountants on year-end accounts, tax computations and any audit or review work.
Maintain a strong control environment, including regular reconciliations and sensible checks to reduce the risk of error or fraud.
Help streamline and improve finance processes, making good use of Sage and other systems already in place (and helping us make better use of them).
Skills & experience
We're looking for someone who can show:
Solid experience in an all-round accounting role within an SME environment (ideally in the UK).
Strong proficiency in Sage for day-to-day bookkeeping and management reporting.
Confident double-entry bookkeeping skills, including journals, reconciliations and general ledger management.
Experience preparing management accounts, including profit & loss, balance sheet reconciliations and basic cashflow reporting.
Hands-on experience with VAT, payroll, PAYE and pensions.
Good understanding of UK accounting principles (e.g. UK GAAP / FRS 102 / FRS 105 appropriate to SME level).
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to spot and resolve discrepancies quickly.
Comfortable working with spreadsheets for analysis, reporting and reconciliations.
Clear and confident communication skills, able to explain numbers and issues to non-finance colleagues.
A proactive, organised approach and the ability to manage your own workload and deadlines.
Qualifications
A recognised accountancy qualification (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) or part-qualification is preferred, but not essential.
We will also consider candidates who are qualified by experience in a similar role and can demonstrate strong capability across bookkeeping, accounts and payroll.
What you can expect
In return, you'll be joining a friendly, down-to-earth team where finance is seen as a partner to the business, not just a back-office function.
You'll have the chance to shape how we do things, modernise processes where it makes sense, and build a finance function that supports the next stage of Mastercopy's growth.
