Responsibilities/Duties:
Core function
The Acquisition Assistant performs a range of administrative and editorial tasks necessary to acquire licensed books. They act as the liaison for the many people involved at the first stage of licensed book publication, supporting the Acquisitions Editor in acquiring new licenses, editorial work and licensor communications.
Core administrative tasks include coding invoices, maintaining department filing records, receiving assets and text from co-publishers and licensors, maintaining the Books database, researching licenses, brands and properties as well as library management and assisting with project handover to editorial staff.
Typical work activities include:
Administrative and practical management of assets of buy-ins.
Review of unsolicited submissions.
Research of potential new licenses for publishing.
Collating market research to support acquisitions, e.g. Bookscan sales, author profiles and competitor publishing plans.
Management of assets delivery where applicable.
Support of Acquisitions Editor:
Review of potential new licenses for publishing
Contact with licensors
Preparation of acquisitions documents, presentations, comps, sales histories, PiPs, pitches and offers
Preparing documents and costings to support pitches at internal meetings.
Book fair and external meeting discussions regarding acquisitions.
Creation and management of marketing and sales materials.
Tracking and managing buy-in publication schedules.
Running print costings, ensuring margins are accurate, and department files are complete.
Taking accurate minutes of meetings and distributing them in a timely manner.
Experience dependent activities include:
Using your own market knowledge to contribute ideas to Editorial activity.
Sourcing licenses and IPs to produce new publications.
Assisting with the initial planning and design of potential publications.
Relationships
Maintain effective communication at all times, ensuring that all information is shared with relevant staff, clients and customers.
Develop and maintain professional working relationships with all personnel.
Provide regular feedback to your line manager ensuring they are advised of all developments and problems in your areas of responsibility.
Act at all times in the best interest of the business to further good relations.
Skills desired:
A demonstrable knowledge of and interest in modern pop culture.
Attention to detail and the ability to meet challenges creatively.
Clarity of vision, financial awareness, and judgement, plus excellent communication skills.
Word, Excel, Powerpoint skills a distinct advantage.
Public speaking/presentation skills an advantage.
