Job Description

The Faculty of Classics seeks to appoint a Herculaneum Society Administration Assistant. The Herculaneum Society was incorporated on 15 June 2004. It promotes conservation, research and public education at the UNESCO Herculaneum Archaeological Site and is an active supporter of projects that further these objectives. The Administration Assistant role is a fixed-term, part-time 0.25 FTE post reporting to the Head of Administration and Finance, effectively managing the public memberships and the Friends of Herculaneum.

About the role


The post holder will oversee the Society's finances, membership, and communications. They will manage income and payments, maintain financial records, and work with accountants on annual statements. They will liaise with banks, the Charities Aid Foundation, and relevant authorities to ensure compliance and efficiency.

The post holder will also support members by maintaining databases, issuing renewals, producing newsletters, organising the AGM, and managing communications through email, website, and social media. They will handle enquiries, assist with fundraising, and provide administrative support to trustees.

The successful applicant will be able to work on their own initiative and possess good attention to detail and organisational skills. They will preferably have previous experience of working in higher education or the heritage sector, good IT skills and be capable and confident in dealing with a wide range of individuals, including students, academics and Herculaneum friends.
