We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic tutor to facilitate an after school chess club in a secondary school in the Wakefield area. Please note that this is for ONE HOUR of teaching per week in school term time on Wednesdays.
The successful candidate will assist secondary school children in understanding the rules of chess, developing skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity, and help students in building resilience after setbacks. This role offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in students' educational journeys.
We will provide a 30-week curriculum to draw from that includes detailed lesson plans, worksheets, and handouts. We offer a full training programme including a full day course on the CSC curriculum and a period spent shadowing experienced tutors in schools.
Responsibilities
Deliver group and one-to-one coaching, adapting methods to suit individual learning styles.
Liaise effectively with school staff and adhere to school specific rules on safeguarding, dress code, use of technology etc.
Foster a positive learning environment that encourages student engagement and motivation, using competitions and chess mini-games/variants to inspire creativity and excellence.
Encourage female participation in chess in line with CSC's aims, promoting equality amongst all students and challenging stereotypes associated with chess
Encourage participation in online chess competitions against other schools (organised by CSC)
Maintain an organised record of sessions and student attendance.
Skills
Proven experience in tutoring or teaching, ideally with children or young adults
Ability to support students with special educational needs (SEND), including those with social and emotional mental health difficulties (SEMH)
Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex concepts clearly and patiently
Organised, reliable, and committed to supporting student success
Administrative skills associated with self employed work
A belief in a growth mindset, with an ability to 'think outside the box' and encourage students to do the same.

All our tutors are self-employed contractors.
All tutors will require an enhanced DBS check. If you don't already have one, CSC will apply for one on your behalf. If you have lived outside the UK in the last five years, you will also need to provide a criminal record certificate from the country or countries you have lived in. CSC will advise you on the procedure for obtaining this.
