About The Simulator Company Ltd

The Simulator Company develops high-fidelity medical simulators that blend precision hardware, immersive XR software, and cloud-connected AI to improve clinical training worldwide. We are expanding our team with a versatile AI & Backend Developer who can design scalable backend systems, integrate AI/ML, build polished Apple apps, and deliver outstanding user experiences for clinicians globally.

Responsibilities

Design and build scalable backend services (REST, GraphQL) using Python, Node.js, PHP/Laravel; migrate legacy systems into containerised microservices. Develop native iOS/iPadOS apps (Swift, SwiftUI), including BLE connectivity, Core Data, and enterprise app distribution. Lead end-to-end UX/UI development for mobile and web dashboards, including clinical workflow mapping, wireframing, high-fidelity Figma prototyping, and pixel-perfect production interfaces that follow Apple HIG and WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards. Integrate AI/ML models (LLMs, vision models, classical ML) for both cloud services and on-device inference (Core ML, TensorFlow Lite); conduct A/B testing to evaluate educational outcomes. Build real-time data pipelines ingesting metrics from sensors, IoT devices, and user interactions, enabling instructor dashboards and trainee performance analytics. Collaborate with Unity/Unreal teams to expose secure APIs, WebSocket streams, and SDKs for real-time simulation synchronisation. Prototype AR/VR experiences using ARKit, RealityKit, or Unity AR Foundation to visualise anatomy, telemetry, and AI-guided feedback. Run user research with clinicians, iterate on usability findings, and champion inclusive design practices. Manage DevOps and cloud infrastructure (Terraform, GitHub Actions, Docker/Kubernetes, AWS/Azure/GCP) alongside observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack). Implement security and compliance best practices (OAuth 2.0, JWT, GDPR, ISO 27001, NHS DSPT).
Required Skills & Experience

5+ years experience in backend development (Python/Django/FastAPI, Node.js/Express, PHP/Laravel/Symfony). 2+ years of iOS/iPadOS app development (Swift/SwiftUI) including enterprise or App Store distribution. Demonstrated UX/UI portfolio (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD) with experience in component libraries and design systems. Strong AI/ML integration experience (OpenAI/Azure OpenAI, Core ML, TensorFlow, PyTorch) with measurable results. Strong database expertise (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, InfluxDB). Cloud deployment experience (AWS, Azure, or GCP). Solid understanding of software architecture, clean coding principles, automated testing (PHPUnit, PyTest, XCTest, Jest), and CI/CD pipelines. Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Desirable (Nice-to-Have)

BSc/MSc in Computer Science, AI, HCI, or related disciplines. Experience with real-time streaming (gRPC, MQTT), device management, or edge AI deployments (NVIDIA Jetson, Google Coral). Familiarity with medical device standards (HL7, FHIR, ISO 13485) or robotics middleware (ROS, ROS 2). AR/VR prototyping experience with Unity or Unreal Engine.
