Role Overview
We are seeking a passionate and practical Cooking Tutor to deliver engaging, skills-based cooking sessions for young people in an alternative provision setting. The role focuses on developing pupils' independence, confidence, and life skills through hands-on food preparation and nutrition education, while supporting positive behaviour and wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver practical cooking lessons tailored to pupils with diverse needs, including SEND and SEMH
Teach basic to intermediate cooking skills, food hygiene, nutrition, and kitchen safety
Adapt lessons to meet individual learning styles and abilities
Promote positive behaviour, teamwork, and independence in the kitchen
Maintain a safe, calm, and structured learning environment
Manage ingredients, equipment, and kitchen resources effectively
Support pupils' personal development, confidence, and engagement
Work collaboratively with teaching staff and support teams
Monitor progress and provide informal feedback on pupils' development
Ensure compliance with safeguarding, health & safety, and food hygiene standards
Person Specification
Essential:
Experience teaching or working with young people, ideally in alternative provision, SEND, or youth settings
Strong practical cooking skills and knowledge of basic nutrition
Ability to build positive relationships with vulnerable or disengaged learners
Calm, patient, and flexible approach
Good understanding of health & safety and food hygiene
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupils' wellbeing
Desirable:
Teaching, tutoring, or vocational training experience
Food Hygiene Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
Experience working with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
Relevant qualification in catering, hospitality, or education

This role is subject to enhanced DBS checks and satisfactory references. The successful candidate will be expected to uphold the safeguarding and welfare of all pupils at all times.
