Job Description

Melksham Town Council is looking for a dedicated and flexible Amenities Assistant to join our Amenities Team. They should show a well-rounded knowledge of groundsmanship and maintenance, including periodic safety inspections as well as isolated reports.

The postholder should be able to handle the demands of outdoor work and be able to undertake a range of physical activities in various weather conditions. They should be knowledgeable about manual handling and health & safety, able to assess risk and approach tasks in a manner that minimises it.

The postholder should take a safety-conscious approach to their job, be responsive to changing priorities, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

The postholder should understand that their role is public-facing and demonstrate a friendly and approachable demeanour. They should be willing to work in and around any Town Council owned or maintained amenities and facilities.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



Includes but are not limited to:

Health & Safety and Maintenance



To assist as directed with regular periodic safety inspections, maintenance checks and remedial actions on grounds, premises and equipment at any Town Council owned, operated or managed facility To assist with general repairs, cleaning and maintenance of the Town Council's owned or managed properties, plant and equipment as required To undertake general maintenance in the town and park areas, to include the cleaning of, and repairs to street furniture, bus shelters, signage, etc. as required To undertake Streetscene cleaning tasks around the town, including street sweeping, litter collection, removal and disposal, etc. To remove and dispose of dangerous or hazardous materials from public spaces when necessary To respond to requests to clear isolated reports of littering / broken glass, etc. To contribute to task risk assessments to ensure safe and sensible working practices

Horticulture and Groundsmanship



To carry out tasks of routine horticulture, groundsmanship and general husbandry at Town Council owned or maintained sites, including grass cutting, strimming, pruning, sweeping and weeding To assist with soft and hard landscaping and horticultural projects including floral displays and hanging baskets

Community Engagement and Support



To be a public-facing representative of the Council, and engage with the community in a friendly, polite and approachable manner To assist at occasional public events held in or in relation to the town's green spaces, marketplace and high street areas, e.g. special events, markets

Other Responsibilities



To act as a representative of the Council as required, including attending meetings, positively promoting the Council within the local community and being one of the Council's public-facing contacts. To work in a way that does not divulge personal and / or confidential information and follow the Council's policies and procedures in relation to data protection and security of information. To promote equality, diversity, and inclusion and being aware of your own actions and those of others. All employees are responsible for eliminating unfair and unlawful discrimination in everything that they do. To participate in the council's annual employee review process To attend training courses and conferences / workshops that support the role, and that contribute to personal and professional development. To fully utilise the HR personnel portal. Performing any other relevant duties which may be assigned from time to time by the Council.

Education, Qualifications and Training



Essential:

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades 4/C or equivalent including Maths and English A full UK driving licence, unless a reasonable adjustment can be made under the Equality Act 2010
Desirable:

Other relevant professional qualifications e.g. plumbing, electrics, decorating, DIY, horticulture COSHH ROSPA First Aid Health and Safety Manual Handling STA in Water Testing or equivalent Signing, lighting and guarding Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting

Work Experience



Essential:

Experience of working in a similar position Experience maintaining open spaces and facilities Able to follow instructions
Desirable:

Previous experience working in a similar position in local government

Salary: 26,403 - 28,598 per annum by annual increment (subject to satisfactory performance) depending on qualifications and experience

National Pay Scale SCP 7 - 12

37 hours per week on a rota covering five days out of seven, including weekends and bank holidays. Unsociable hours may apply.

23 days' annual leave plus 2 extra statutory days plus public holidays and an additional MTC day (rising to 26 days' annual leave plus 2 extra statutory days plus public holidays and an additional MTC day after 5 years' continuous service) (pro rata)

Local Government Pension Scheme (Wiltshire Pension Fund)
