BGS INORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY FACILITY

This role is based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham

UKRI Pay Band D - salary is \xc2\xa331,931 to \xc2\xa334,709 (depending on qualifications and experience)

Full-time - 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available, however, this is primarily a laboratory-based role)

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Analytical Geochemist to support experimental scientific activities / projects, working in the .

The role will involve the operation and maintenance of a range of analytical chemistry equipment to generate geochemistry data to satisfy ISO17025 accreditation for BGS science and for external collaborators on a commercial timescale. The successful candidate will be required to undertake the reporting of data to clients within the service element of the role and assist in continuing the realignment of the laboratory away from entirely routine analyses to tailored method development to target research for key UK and international stakeholders, therefore, must have the desire and willingness to develop their own science capability along with method development.

More specifically, the candidate will operate initially and succeed in the management of our gamma spectrometer laboratory to develop the research and business for geochronology and assist in the operation of microspatial analyses using laser ablation-ICP-MS. For both gamma spectrometry and laser ablation, we are managing a succession process for retirements, with a need for the new postholder to quickly take on the research partner networks.

You will be required to oversee student projects to develop new analytical methodologies for deployment in a laboratory or field environment. Opportunities are likely to arise for UK and/or international fieldwork, partnering with research organisations.

About you

We are looking for someone with a first Degree in Chemistry or related subject area and a PhD with analytical/geochemistry experience. Membership of and engagement with a learned society e.g. RSC, GeolSoc, IAG, COGER, SEGH is highly desirable.

This role requires a good chemical / geochemical background, with the skills for practical activities (e.g. lab experiments), but other skills such as data handling and modelling would be very desirable.

Initially we would expect you to be preparing technical specifications for new investment, writing of specialist research papers and liaison with colleagues outside of the direct work team and BGS.
