In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth coordination of animal intake, rehabilitation and rehoming. You will promote responsible pet ownership, kindness and preventing cruelty to animals within the branch area to schools, community organisations as well as the general public.
You will provide support to individual members of the public with technical animal welfare guidance to minimise occasions when someone has to give their animal up for rehoming. This will be through behavioural advice as well as assessing applications for the branch Animal Welfare Fund to provide temporary accommodation or veterinary treatment.
Organised with excellent communication skills you will promote the work of our branch through all your interactions with members of the public, volunteers, professional partners and suppliers.
Principal Accountabilities:
Animal Welfare:
To liaise with inspectors regarding intake of animals and, together with the administrator, to support other branches with the intake of inspectorate animals to our branch space if finances allow.
To coordinate animals being brought into branch care from members of the public who cannot continue to provide for them, on a permanent basis (for example due to their own health, living situation or finances) if space and finances allow.
Together with the branch administrator, to maintain excellent relationships and operational oversight of our private boarding establishments and foster carers including through regular in-person visits:
To ensure animals within the branch are receiving high standards of care.
To ensure our branch animals are in good health and to capture details about their needs that must be met by any potential adopter.
To ensure private boarding establishments' and fosterers' paperwork is compliant with National Society guidelines.
To ensure all paperwork and filing is kept up to date including our database Animal Shelter Management (ASM).
With support from the administrator, to review and consider all adoption application forms against the individual animal and coordinate home visits and adoption visits prior to rehoming, as well as post-adoption home visits.
To provide guidance and support to ensure the new home is set up for success.
Lead on training and support to the Branch Home Visitors and Foster Carers.
Support people within the branch area to keep their animals at home, providing telephone / email guidance and direct support that meets the physical and emotional needs of each animal including enrichment, exercise, grooming and assisting in administration of treatment medication and transport.
Animal Welfare Fund Management:
To assess and coordinate applications for the Branch's Animal Welfare Fund, which may include:
Agree accommodation on a temporary basis for animals in need e.g. due to their owner being in hospital.
Agree veterinary treatment for animals in need that the owner or their insurance policy cannot meet.
Agree allocation of vouchers for welfare assistance, such as for food banks, neutering, vaccination and microchipping.
Keep detailed records of decisions and outcomes of how the Fund has been distributed.
To assess and handle animals from members of the public and assess their needs;
Develop effective partnerships to ensure our Fund meets local needs, e.g. promoting the Fund to social services, health care professionals and domestic violence charities.
Education:
Plan, deliver and evaluate animal welfare talks including in schools which give children the opportunity to develop an empathy for animals and learn about the work of the RSPCA.
Advance the aims of the Branch and promote responsible pet ownership by speaking at community events as required.
Develop, maintain and evaluate strong and effective community partnerships and networks with organisations who share our purpose to effect positive behaviour change.
Maintain high standards of health and safety and child/vulnerable adult safeguarding through understanding and adherence to education and branch policies and procedures, including preparing risk assessments.
Branch operations:
To respond to telephone calls and emails promptly, updating relevant systems with details as required.
Provide a written report for monthly committee meetings and attend committee meetings where required.
To produce content for the quarterly Branch e-newsletter and social media platforms, and write case studies for the branch website.
To produce content based on National Society initiatives (such as Adoptober) to bring them to life in our branch area.
Together with the administrator, actively advertise and support the recruitment of foster carers and home visitors
Finance & Compliance:
Detailed record keeping to evidence successful applications to the branch Animal Welfare Fund, to enable private boarding / veterinary invoices to be paid, maintaining accurate records.
Ensure high standards of data protection are met.
