Outline of the job




Initially you will be working with a member/s of our engineering staff (RAC Engineer) who will provide one to one support and guidance in your professional development.


As your ability and experience develops you will undertake simple tasks on your own but under our direct supervision.


As your skills and experience develop further you will undertake simple tasks yourself, this will gradually increase in line with time and your skills sets with the eventual aim of you being able to undertake the majority of our workscope unsupervised.

In addition....




In addition to 'on the job' in-house training and skill transfer we will work with Page 2 of 4 Apprentice Engineer training establishments such as technical colleges and other specialists to deliver nationally recognised qualifications in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and associated areas which may include:
Initial Safety Inductions, one on the first day of employment with us and then when attending specialist sites where specific rules and regulations apply.

City & Guilds Level 2 in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Systems


City & Guilds 2079 Cat F-Gas Refrigerant Handling (within above qualification)


City & Guilds 6187-21/31 Hydrocarbon Refrigerant Handling


PASMA Tower Scaffolding Course


IPAF Mobile Elevated Work Platform 3a + 3b Course


Manufacturers Product Training either at their centres or via an on-line provision.

You will be required to....




provide clear feedback to members of our engineering team and our branch manager on your progress and any relevant aspects of our work scope.


You will work with other members of staff to promote and improve Pitkin & Ruddock's organisational values and objectives.


As a point of reference our normal work scope includes; - Carry out service work / repairs to a wide range of refrigeration, air conditioning and other associated equipment. - Carry out the installation and commissioning of refrigeration, air conditioning and other associated equipment. - Carry out planned maintenance (PPM) of refrigeration, air conditioning and other associated equipment.

Safety Aspects




A basic knowledge of Health and Safety in the general workplace is required and additional training will be provided to ensure you can work in a safe manner following our developed Safe Systems of Work.


You will assist with the promotion of good Health Safety & Environmental practice within our work place.


Health, safety and environmental factors are a primary consideration in all aspects of our business and we require everyone to be fully engaged with this concept, all employees including trainees need to follow the guidance given and where they are unsure, do not proceed until actions are clarified and agreed.

Essential Criteria




You will need to have a logical organised approach to both your learning and the physical aspects of our work.


You will need to develop a good set of problem solving skills and be adaptable to technical changes in a fast moving industry.


You will need to be flexible and adaptable in your approach to work and adopt a 'can do' approach.


You will need to have good IT skills and be able to adapt to different learning styles.


You should be physically fit as the role has a reasonable degree of manual work in a variety of work situations / sites. Areas of concern include, colour blindness, vertigo, epilepsy or similar conditions, hearing, dexterity problems.

Desirable Criteria




Ideally at least 17 years of age. Site attendance restrictions prohibit those under 18 years of age.


Passed driving test for, or learning to drive manual vehicles.


No, or minimal points on driving licence.


Own transport to get to P&R work base.


Achieved Grade 'C' or '4' in English, Maths, and IT as these are required to meet apprenticeship level 2 minimum enrolment requirements.
