Appropriate Adult

Newport, WLS, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

As a Bank Appropriate Adult (AA) with Nini Social Care, you provide essential, statutory support to vulnerable individuals, primarily unaccompanied juveniles and mentally vulnerable adults, involved in formal legal and assessment proceedings.

Your core function is dual:

To attend police custody suites to support detainees under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE), and critically, to attend Social Services settings to support young people during formal Age Assessment interviews (compliant with the Merton Principles).
Your mission is non-negotiable: to ensure procedural fairness, comprehension, and welfare protection throughout all processes.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties are centred on safeguarding and procedural rigour.

You will attend formal Age Assessment interviews conducted by Social Services to ensure the interview process is fair, neutral, and supportive. You are required to monitor the young person's mental state during assessments, intervening immediately to request necessary breaks, delays, or postponements if they are too distressed or mentally unfit to continue. A key part of the role is to assertively, yet professionally, challenge Social Workers or Police Officers if questioning is adversarial, biased, or causes undue distress. You will also attend police custody for detainees, ensuring they understand their rights (e.g., to legal advice and to silence). Finally, you must carefully review and sign all relevant custody records, age assessment notes, and final procedural documentation to ensure accuracy and procedural compliance.

Skills and Experience Required

Candidates must demonstrate an unwavering

commitment to welfare

and an ability to work independently in high-pressure, reactive settings. Essential skills include

Assertiveness and Impartiality, as you must be confident in challenging authority professionally while maintaining a protective stance. You must possess strong Procedural Awareness, able to quickly apply legal guidance, specifically the PACE codes of practice and Merton Principles relating to age assessments. This is a Zero Hours Contract (Bank Role), so flexibility and a willingness to work reactively on a 24/7 rota, including short-notice call-outs outside standard business hours, are essential.
Experience working with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) or formal Appropriate Adult Training is highly desirable. An enhanced DBS check is required.

Benefits

Nini Social Care offers a competitive hourly rate, a company pension scheme, a referral programme, and paid mileage/travel expenses for attending custody and assessment suites. This role provides the opportunity to engage in critical, high-impact work that directly impacts human rights and welfare.

How to Apply

If you have the professionalism, assertiveness, and ethical commitment required for this challenging and essential role, please submit your CV and a covering letter detailing your experience with vulnerable people and your ability to work on a reactive, flexible schedule.
