Job Description

Reporting to a Resource Lead within the Laser Processing Team in Coventry, the Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) role will be focused on the technical delivery of surface engineering projects and support the development of project related activities across the MTC. This will include the Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) working across various technology departments and industrial sectors. The surface engineering capability theme, part of the Laser Processing Team, has an excellent track record in delivering value to industry. With a large portfolio of government funded and industrially funded projects, the Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) surface engineering role will contribute to, and lead projects for, the development of surface engineering solutions for MTC customers and research collaborators.

Largely independent supply of larger project's technical deliverables, and act as Technical Lead for smaller projects, where required. Ensure project work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales. Undertake innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, and able to demonstrate industrial project delivery. To contribute in the identification, technical specification and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial members premises. This role will require involvement in all aspects of the project delivery including but not restricted to: concept generation, detailed design, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, awareness of project budget and deliverables.

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience



Degree calibre scientist, engineer or technologist. Knowledge and demonstrable experience in any or all the following areas: + Laser surface engineering and laser-matter interactions.
+ Approaches to developing functional surfaces.
+ Approaches to producing textured surfaces.
+ Surface analysis techniques including the measurement of wettability.
Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills are required for the role. Able to demonstrate a high standard of report writing and presentation skills. A desire to support colleagues and transfer knowledge in area of expertise to others in the department, and to wider MTC colleagues. Committed to work collaboratively and network effectively. Pragmatic hands-on experience, providing problem solving approach and willing to physically participate in completion of work when required. Self-motivated and a self-starter, with the ability to work autonomously to meet deadlines, budgets and quality expectations, both within a team, or independently. Experience working where subsequent adherence to associated process and policy is critical to maintain customer confidentiality.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience



Professional registration or a desire to work towards professional registration. Have good knowledge of the UK manufacturing sector. Have knowledge or be willing to learn about the application of life cycle analysis.

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry - often referred to as 'the valley of death'.


It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.


In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the 'workshop'.


Over the following seven years the MTC's rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.


Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.


We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.


During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
