We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated

Area Manager - Building Control

to join

Westmorland and Furness Council

, providing leadership and direction to one of our Building Control area teams within the

Thriving Places

Directorate.



Our

Building

Control Service

is responsible for ensuring that development across Westmorland and Furness meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance with the

Building Regulations

and the

Building Safety Act

. The service also manages the Council's statutory duties for

dangerous structures

, helping to safeguard residents, businesses, and the built environment.



As an

Area Manager

, you will lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the Building Control team within your designated geographical area. Reporting to the

Senior Manager for Building Control

, you will oversee a team of Principal, Senior, and Building Control Surveyors and Trainee Surveyors, ensuring high performance, professional development, and consistent delivery of a customer-focused, compliant, and resilient service.



You will take the lead in managing complex and high-risk projects, overseeing inspections, plan assessments, and certifications, while maintaining strong relationships with developers, architects, contractors, and partners. You will also play a key role in driving continuous improvement, supporting innovation, and ensuring quality and consistency across the service.


Key priorities include:




Leading and managing a skilled team of Building Control professionals to deliver high-quality, compliant services. Overseeing the delivery of inspections, plan assessments, and certifications in accordance with Building Regulations. Managing enforcement actions, including dangerous structures procedures. Ensuring compliance, quality assurance, and best practice across all projects and processes. Supporting professional development, mentoring surveyors, and encouraging continuous learning. Promoting innovation, service improvement, and the adoption of new technologies.

Who we are looking for...





We're seeking a confident and experienced

Building Control professional

with strong leadership skills and a passion for ensuring excellence in compliance, safety, and service delivery. You'll be a proactive and technically skilled manager who can inspire and develop others while maintaining high professional standards.



You will hold

full membership of a recognised professional body

such as

RICS

,

CABE

, or

CIOB

, and be a

qualified Class 3 Building Inspector

(or working towards this) as well as a

Class 4 Technical Manager

. You will also hold a

degree or HNC/HND in Building Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field

.


You will bring:




Significant experience in Building Control, with a proven record of managing teams and complex projects. Comprehensive knowledge of UK Building Regulations, construction practices, and the Building Safety Act. Strong project and resource management skills, with the ability to lead multiple projects effectively. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to resolve complex compliance and technical issues. Commitment to continuous improvement, professional development, and delivering outstanding customer service.
