Art And Design Technician (maternity Cover)

Ipswich, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Required from September 2025

Part-time, 20 hours per week during term time (35 weeks per annum)

Hours to be worked over 4 or 5 days Mondays-Fridays

(to be discussed/agreed at interview)

Art and Design is a popular and successful subject at Ipswich School. We inspire our students to go on to study Foundation, Fine Art, Fashion or Textiles, Architecture, Graphic Design and Product Design degrees when they leave us.

You will provide valuable assistance and support within our Senior School Art and Design Department, working closely on a day to day basis with our Director of Art and Design and our teaching and support staff.

It would be highly desirable for you to have qualifications in art, and expertise in a specific area (for example, sculpture, painting, printing or ceramics) and the ability to apply your expertise to whole school activities.

Experience with clay would also be an advantage, and we would expect you to demonstrate aesthetic awareness and a knowledge of art in its broadest sense.

You must be flexible and willing to undertake a variety of duties working as a member of the team. The following gives you a flavour of some of the main duties and tasks you will undertake for us:

Stocktaking and ordering of materials, including the handling of invoices, monitoring the department budget and keeping a record of student material charges. You will maintain supplies and prepare art, textile and pottery materials as requested. Assist with classroom activities, following the direction of the teacher, for example, helping with the use of sewing machines, the printing press and accompanying teachers/pupils on local trips during working hours. Provide assistance with the issue of all equipment to staff upon request, and the preparation of teaching aids. Assist teachers with curating exhibitions (particularly for students' GCSE and A level work) and be able to put up displays independently around the School. Build and construct wooden items used by students (therefore sound knowledge of power and hand tools is essential i.e. jigsaw, mini circular saw and drills etc). Assist with administrative tasks (for example, photocopying, filing pupils' work). Liaise with other departments (for example School Office, Reception, DT, Catering, Estates). Source and supply equipment not available from normal school suppliers. Maintain the sewing machines in the department and keep the Textile Room and Photography Room tidy. Maintain sinks and work surfaces in a clean and tidy condition. Recycle clay for students and teachers and operate the kiln, loading and unloading students' work. Clear and dispose of old student work and liaise with parents for upcoming exhibitions and the collection of work. Be prepared to undertake appropriate professional training and development activities. Inform the Head of Department of any unsafe equipment.
