Job Description


We are looking for an art graduate to work as an Art Technician and boarding assistant, to join us for the academic year beginning September 2023. This is an exciting and challenging role, with accommodation and meals provided during term time. This is a full time, fixed term contract.

Role overview

We are seeking to appoint an art graduate, to work as an Art technician, working primarily at our newly built Art Centre, in support of the thriving Sixth Form and International School Art departments. The position is designed to be fully residential: in addition to their role in the Art department, the successful candidate will have a role as a Boarding Assistant in one of the school\'s boarding houses.

The role has two complementary dimensions. As an Art Technician, the successful candidate will assist the Art teachers with the preparation of materials and equipment for lessons and individual student projects and contribute to the variety of Art clubs and activities. They will be responsible for ordering and stocking, as well as keeping the place tidy and teaching-ready; in the boarding house there is an expectation to support the Heads of Boarding House and to help with some aspects of the running of the House in which accommodation is provided.

The role could present an excellent career development opportunity for Art enthusiasts who are considering a career in teaching, or alongside developing their own practice as artists.

The successful candidate will also be required to undertake a first aid qualification, as well as various in-house training sessions on the equipment.

Person Specification and Necessary Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Either a degree in Art or a related subject, or other appropriate vocational qualifications and experience;
In addition to the above, we are looking for candidates who:

Have experience using a wide range of materials and processes ranging across clay-work and kiln operation, screen printing, sculpture, casting, woodwork machinery, 3D construction, laser cutting.

Are committed and interested in contemporary Art practices and supporting young people\'s artistic talents;
  • Have a caring and cheerful personality and a demonstrable ability to relate to students, parents and colleagues with empathy and sensitivity;
  • Have a mature, responsible, patient, positive and resilient attitude to life and work;
  • Have an ability to be firm while doing so in a friendly, engaging and respectful manner;
  • Are reliable, responsible and well organised with strong communication skills;
  • Have good, reliable and balanced judgement and the ability to think clearly and rationally in an emergency;
  • Are good team players who will work well with colleagues and with students both in the Art department and in the boarding context;
  • Have good practical and administrative skills.
Duties and Responsibilities

Art Technician

It is the Art Technician\'s role to support the teaching of Art and Design to all year groups and especially the Sixth Form. We aim to make the art room environment a safe, stimulating and rewarding place for students.

You will be responsible to the Sixth Form Head of Art.

As Art Technician, you will liaise with the Head of Department and other art teachers about forthcoming lessons and projects that require preparation and support. The Technician should therefore be aware of what is being taught and when it is being taught. You may be asked to help in the delivery of Art lessons, in support and guidance to individual students. The role includes:

Prepare materials such as screens, wood-cutting, files for laser cutting, casting;

Help display work in the art room and corridors;

Keep a notebook in which the art teachers can write requirements for forthcoming lessons;

Assist the art teachers in preparing for exhibitions;

Assist students in lessons, as appropriate;

Assist with administrative tasks e.g. photocopying, ordering, liaising with deliveries;
  • Be responsible for keeping the art room and works spaces are safe, clean and tidy at all times;
  • Make sure stocks of materials and equipment are maintained, accordingly assisting with ordering stock and stocktaking.
  • You may also be asked to assist with a miscellaneous variety of administrative tasks in the school.
  • While you will be primarily based at our Sixth Form and International School site at Milford House, Summertown, you may from time to time be asked to support the teaching of Art at our 7-11 site.
Boarding Duties

The overall responsibility for the running of the boarding houses rests with the Heads of House. As a Boarding Assistant, you will be expected to help and support the Heads of House to:
  • Create and maintain in the House a happy, safe, positive atmosphere which is conducive to the students feeling at ease and able to live and work happily;
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of the students by adhering to and ensuring compliance with the school\'s Safeguarding and Child protection Policy at all times;
  • Build and maintain positive and constructive relationships with students, on order to provide them with the best possible care and support;
  • Exercise an important pastoral role within the House and look after the welfare of the students living in it;
  • Foster a sense of house identity and spirit by encouraging active participation in house activities by all students;
  • Ensure that the House rules are being followed at all times and address any infringements that may occur;
  • Carry out practical daily tasks in the boarding house on a rota basis with other colleagues or as requested by the Heads of House or the Head of Boarding.
You will be on a duty rota with other colleagues, the aim being to ensure that the House is always adequately staffed, that there is always someone there for the students and that House rules are being respected.
