Job Summary




Brighton College are seeking to appoint an Art Technician on a part-time, permanent basis.




Main Purpose of the Role:

The Art Technician supports the smooth running of a busy, creative and ambitious department, maintaining equipment and materials. The post holder will ensure that the learning environment is organised and safe and will assist staff and pupils with technical processes and displays.


General Duties and Responsibilities




General Departmental Duties




Order art materials and track inventory for the Art and Photography departments. Process purchase orders and maintain budget records using Webexpenses. Check deliveries, distribute materials, and maintain organised storage. Keep all department areas tidy and cupboards in order daily. Stock paper drawers and refill printers and photocopiers regularly. Assist pupils and staff in mounting and displaying work for GCSE and A2 moderation. Paint walls or display areas when needed.

Photography Responsibilities




Maintain excellent working knowledge of darkroom setup and processes. Change chemicals and ensure all darkroom equipment, trays, and sinks are clean. Organise servicing and repair of enlargers. Order photographic stock and maintain supplies. Frame and hang work for moderation and exhibitions. Reload printers and manage photo printing tasks. Set up and assist with photoshoots, including lighting, backdrops, and technical support for pupils. Provide darkroom demonstrations and technical assistance to pupils. Manage and maintain camera equipment loans, ensuring all items are in good working order and arranging repairs when necessary. Explore and teach alternative photography practices, such as cyanotypes, fogged paper prints, and toning processes.

Digital & Technical Support




Provide technical and software support to both staff and pupils in digital art and photography. Keep up to date with developments in art and design software, sharing knowledge with staff. Print large-format exhibition and coursework pieces to a high standard.

Exhibitions & Displays




Help design, frame, and hang exhibitions, including moderation displays. Assist in installing pupil work for exams and gallery displays. Periodically rotate and refresh exhibitions in the Burstow Gallery and corridor spaces. Organise and safely store past pupils work as exemplars or for later collection.

Other Duties




Organise cupboards for consistency across rooms. Provide specialist materials on request for specific lessons. Perform any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Art and Photography.

Person Specifications




The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:


A degree in Visual Arts or a related field. Friendly, helpful, and positive attitude toward pupils and staff. Proven ability to work as part of a team, liaising effectively with other departments. Strong organisational skills, ensuring departmental objectives are met. Attention to detail in maintaining stock, equipment, and facilities. Technical proficiency in photography, printmaking, and fine art processes. Excellent knowledge of darkroom processes, including chemical handling and enlarger operation. Proficiency in software such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Portfolio, and Canva. Good communication and instructional skills, supporting both staff and students. Basic maintenance and repair skills for art and photography equipment. Creative problem-solving and adaptability in supporting artistic projects and exhibitions.

Hours of Work




The successful candidate will be required to work 7.5 hours per week. The working pattern for this role is Tuesday, 8.30am to 5.00pm with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break. This role will work term time (35 weeks).


Remuneration




The salary for this role is 5,481 per annum.


Holidays




Holiday entitlement is included in the salary for the role. All holiday is to be taken outside of the working weeks.
