We are looking for a detail-oriented and diligent Assistant Accountant to join our finance team at Beverley Building Society. This role will support the finance department in managing daily financial operations while ensuring strict adherence to regulatory requirements and compliance standards set by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA). The ideal candidate will gain if not already know an understanding of financial regulations in the banking or financial services sector and will play a key role in maintaining the accuracy, transparency, and regulatory compliance of financial records.
Key Responsibilities:
Bookkeeping & Data Entry:
Accurately record financial transactions into accounting software or spreadsheets, ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements (e.g., FCA, PRA, GDPR).
Ensure all transactions are logged in a timely and precise manner in accordance with the building society's financial policies and procedures.
Accounts Payable:
Assist with processing supplier invoices, ensuring they comply with the building society's financial policies and procedures.
Maintain accurate accounts payable, ensuring that payments regulatory standards.
Bank Reconciliations:
Reconcile company bank accounts with financial records to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.
Identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring financial data is accurate and audit-ready.
Financial Reporting:
Assist in preparing regulatory and financial reports in compliance with UK financial regulations (e.g., FCA, PRA, IFRS).
Assist in preparing month and year end financial reports.
Payroll Support:
Assist with payroll processing, verifying timesheets and ensuring accurate pay calculations in line with relevant employment laws and financial regulations.
Ensure compliance with HMRC tax and National Insurance contributions.
Maintaining Financial Records:
Organize and maintain financial records in compliance with UK regulatory requirements and the building society's data protection policies (GDPR).
Ensure records are securely stored and easily accessible for audits or internal reviews.
Expense Management:
Review company expenses to ensure compliance with internal financial policies and regulatory requirements.
Assist in processing employee expense claims, ensuring they meet both internal and regulatory standards.
Budgeting & Forecasting:
Support the finance team in preparing and reviewing financial budgets and forecasts, ensuring they comply with regulatory guidelines.
General Finance Assistance:
Provide administrative support to the finance team, including managing financial inquiries, taking minutes and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.
Ensure compliance with the building society's governance and risk management frameworks.
Audit Support:
Assist in preparing for internal and external audits in compliance with financial regulations (e.g., FCA regulations, GDPR).
Provide necessary financial documentation and respond to auditor inquiries as needed.
Any other duties as defined by the senior team for the compliant running of the building society.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
Essential:
Previous experience in a finance or accounting role (excellent if it is within a regulated financial environment such as a building society, bank, or credit union, however all sectors will be considered).
Familiarity with accounting principles, financial reporting, and audit processes in a regulated environment.
Proficient in Excel.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential financial data in compliance with GDPR.
Desirable:
AAT qualified or part qualified (or equivalent experience).
Knowledge of financial regulations specific to the building society or banking sector, including FCA and PRA rules.
Experience with payroll systems and tax reporting.
Familiarity with anti-money laundering (AML) and fraud prevention protocols.
Education and Experience:
Experience in a finance assistant or similar role within a regulated environment (building society, bank, or financial services) is advantageous.
