As an Assistant Instructor, your role is to support the Lead Instructor in delivering safe, engaging, and enjoyable sessions for groups of up to 30 children. You'll help set up and run activities, play games, assist with equipment, and ensure children's needs are met throughout the session. Above all, you'll bring enthusiasm, energy, and a positive attitude to create the best possible experience for the children.
Key Responsibilities
Supporting the Lead Instructor
Assist the Lead Instructor in every session, asking how best to help while also taking initiative.
Mirror and reinforce the Lead's instructions (e.g., helping quieten the group, setting up equipment while activities are being explained).
Communicate promptly with the Lead about any issues, particularly regarding safeguarding, behaviour, or safety.
Be proactive - prevention is always better than cure.
Session Delivery
Join in with activities and games to encourage participation and create a fun atmosphere.
Step in to lead small activities or "filler games" when needed.
Support with group management, especially during transitions such as sign-in and sign-out.
Help manage behaviour appropriately and escalate more serious issues to the Lead.
Equipment & Setup
Assist with setting up and packing away activities and equipment.
Ensure equipment is stored correctly and safely in the appropriate bags for future sessions.
Report any equipment issues or shortages to the Lead.
Sign-in / Sign-out
Welcome children and engage them in a short activity while the Lead manages registration.
Help with bibs, kit, and group organisation during arrival and departure.
Ensure children remain safe and supervised at all times, especially near gates and exits.
Child Wellbeing
Support children's physical needs (clothing, hydration, toilet breaks, first aid).
Create a safe environment by identifying and addressing hazards or unsafe behaviour.
Familiarise yourself with children's medical, dietary, or additional needs to ensure inclusion and safety.
Promote positive emotional wellbeing by listening, using age-appropriate language, encouraging respect, and praising effort.
Professional Conduct
Arrive early, dressed appropriately in uniform and weather-appropriate clothing.
Bring required ID and DBS documentation, ensuring it is up to date.
Follow all company policies and procedures, particularly around safeguarding.
Maintain positive relationships with school staff, parents, and carers.
Contribute to leaving each venue tidy, safe, and as found.
What We're Looking For
Enthusiasm, energy, and a genuine passion for working with children.
A proactive, supportive attitude - ready to help the Lead and step in where needed.
Reliability, professionalism, and a commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and fun experiences for all children.
In short: Be proactive, be positive, keep children safe, and most importantly - have fun! Children thrive when adults are enjoying themselves too.
