The Assistant Manager will support the Registered Manager in the day-to-day running of Beacon Haven Children's Home, ensuring the service operates in line with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, and Ofsted expectations. They will help lead a trauma-informed, child-centred environment that promotes safety, healing, and positive development for children with EBD, SEMH, and complex needs.
This role requires excellent leadership, safeguarding knowledge, and the ability to motivate staff to deliver high-quality, consistent care. The Assistant Manager will act as Deputy in the Registered Manager's absence and may be part of the on-call management rota.
Key Responsibilities and Duties Operational Leadership
Support the Registered Manager in the effective daily operation of the home.
Lead shifts, supervise staff, and ensure rota cover and compliance with staffing ratios (e.g., 2:1 or 1:1 as assessed).
Contribute to the development and implementation of care plans and behaviour support strategies.
Assist in audits, inspections, and preparation of documentation for Ofsted compliance.
Help implement and monitor policies, procedures, and risk assessments in line with legislation.
Safeguarding and Compliance
Act as Deputy DSL where required; respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
Ensure timely and accurate recording of incidents, complaints, or allegations, following escalation protocols.
Maintain oversight of physical interventions, missing from care episodes, and behaviour management logs.
Uphold a culture of transparency, professional curiosity, and continuous improvement in safeguarding practice.
Staff Support and Supervision
Supervise, mentor and support staff to reflect therapeutic, trauma-informed practice (e.g., PACE).
Facilitate team meetings, debriefs, and reflective practice sessions.
Support recruitment, induction, and probation monitoring of new staff.
Deliver or coordinate training and ensure staff compliance with mandatory and specialist courses.
Child-Centred Care
Promote children's participation in care planning, daily routines, and decisions affecting their lives.
Support children in attending education, therapy, health appointments, and activities.
Advocate for young people's emotional, psychological, and social needs.
Model inclusive, respectful, and nurturing relationships with all children in the home.
Monitoring and Reporting
Maintain accurate and timely records on care planning, case notes, safeguarding, medication, and risk assessments.
Contribute to the home's development plan, quality assurance reporting, and staff performance tracking.
Attend and represent the home in LAC reviews, professionals' meetings, and multi-agency forums.
Emergency and On-Call Cover
Participate in the on-call management rota, offering advice, direction, and emergency response.
Step up in the absence of the Registered Manager to ensure continuity of care and oversight.
Person Specification (Brief Summary)
NVQ Level 3 in Residential Childcare (or equivalent) - essential
Working toward or willing to complete Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management - desirable
Minimum 2 years' experience working in a children's home or similar setting
Strong knowledge of safeguarding, risk assessment, and children's legislation
Understanding of trauma, neurodiversity, EBD, SEMH, and therapeutic models such as PACE
Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
