Assistant Transport Manager

Job Description

To assist the Transport Manager in the efficient, compliant, and cost-effective operation of the company's transport activities. The role supports daily fleet operations, driver management, compliance monitoring, and customer service, ensuring that transport services are delivered safely and on time.

Rotating shift pattern:

Week 1

6am to 4pm,

Week 2

10am to 8pm

Key Responsibilities:



Assist in the day-to-day management of transport operations, including scheduling, route planning, and vehicle allocation. Support compliance with Operator's Licence conditions, DVSA regulations, and Working Time Directive requirements. Monitor driver performance, tachograph data, fuel usage, and vehicle defects. Liaise with customers, drivers, and other departments to resolve delivery or service issues promptly. Maintain accurate records of vehicle maintenance, MOT, and insurance documentation. Support accident reporting, investigations, and insurance claims. Assist with driver recruitment, training, and induction processes. Deputise for the Transport Manager during periods of absence. Promote health and safety best practices across the transport operation. Identify opportunities for process improvement and cost savings. Cover supervisors who are on holiday (including weekends/nights)

Key Skills & Competencies:



Strong understanding of transport legislation and compliance (including Driver Hours, Tachograph, and Road Transport Regulations). Excellent communication and organisational skills. Ability to plan routes and manage multiple priorities under pressure. IT proficiency (MS Excel, Transport Management Systems, Telematics). Problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Leadership and people management skills. Attention to detail and strong record-keeping ability

Qualifications & Experience:



Previous experience in a transport or logistics coordination/management role. Good knowledge of UK road transport regulations. CPC (desirable). Full UK driving licence (HGV Class 1 or 2 licence advantageous). Experience using systems such as FleetCheck, Microlise,Qargo Tru Tac, or similar is beneficial.
