We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join this team in the role of:
Deputy General Counsel
Global Legal plays an important role in protecting HSBC's reputation, helping to safeguard the organisation by providing robust and comprehensive advice on legal issues and risks. Our lawyers advise senior management and the Global Businesses and Functions. They offer a range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all the countries and territories in which HSBC operates.
The Deputy General Counsel provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks faced by the area of coverage are identified, reported and mitigated.

In this role, you will:
Lead and manage the IWPB Legal team, ensuring appropriate skill set within the team for the type of work encountered
Act as a member of the Global Legal wider leadership team, contributing as required on global issues and leadership actions
Advise relevant senior managers on non-standard legal and reputational risks whilst evaluating and responding to changes in legal and regulatory requirements as they arise. Horizon scanning for potential risks and advising the business how it can get ahead of those risks
Set relevant policies and procedures for the relevant area of coverage to ensure that Legal's role in the second line of defence can be executed and provide counsel and legal support in relation to material regulatory issues having an impact on the relevant business
Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with all team members, lead, manage, review, guide and support lawyers and support staff within the team
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
Qualified Lawyer with significant experience managing a specialised team of lawyers and paraprofessionals is essential, with a Jersey law qualification being highly advantageous
Financial services/banking knowledge would be ideal with some understanding of financial crime and cross border issues being preferable
Ability to think independently being mindful of maintaining an appropriate balance between management and mitigation of legal risk and business efficacy with the ability to prioritise workloads in terms of legal risk and commercial consideration.
Enhanced relationship management skills with higher levels of management inspiring confidence of customers/stakeholders and able to balance the need for further analysis and the need for a timely decision given commercial pressures.
Strong oral and written communication and inter-personal skills with the ability to navigate multiple stakeholders with competing priorities and under time pressure in addition to being able to deal with new and unexpected situations, a lateral thinker with strong problem-solving ability
