Do you have a passion for criminology and teaching? Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to teach in 2026.



The School of Social Sciences is looking to recruit a part-time, Associate Lecturer to deliver lectures, seminars, and associated assessment supervision this coming Spring term.



As Associate Lecturer you will teach on two undergraduate Criminology modules:


Imprisonment and Justice

Teaching for 15 hours Mondays 6-7.30pm 12 January to 23 March 2026 This module runs over 15 hours (1.5 hours a week) on Mondays 6-7:30pm from January to March with marking into April/May.

You will have a broad knowledge of teaching critical approaches to imprisonment and justice to undergraduates on a Criminology and Criminal Justice degree. This will include a particular emphasis on understanding imprisonment and penal systems, theories of punishment, inequality and discrimination within carceral settings, and alternatives to imprisonment. The Criminal Justice Process

Teaching for 30 hours Wednesdays 6-9pm 29 April to 8 July 2026 This module runs over 30 hours (3 hours a week) on Wednesdays 6-9pm from April to July with marking into August.

You will have a broad knowledge of teaching critical approaches to the criminal justice process to undergraduates on a Criminology and Criminal Justice degree. This will include a particular emphasis on understanding the criminal justice process and related institutions, such as police, courts, prisons and probation; theories of justice and punishment; and structural inequality and oppression within criminal justice institutions. Remuneration





Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate 69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a 'Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier' at 2.5 which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
