Birkbeck Business School is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach the module:-
Taxation
13.5 hours, teaching on Friday 7.30pm-9pm
Spring Term, 9 weeks of teaching, Jan - August 2026.
This module provides a framework through which students can acquire an understanding of the main features of the UK tax system - Income Tax, Corporation Tax, Capital Gains Tax and VAT - from an individual and business perspective. This leads to an appreciation of the effect of taxation on personal and business decisions.
In addition, the course provides an understanding of the main economic and social considerations in the design of the UK tax system.
The aim of this course is to explore and develop themes to achieve a deeper appreciation of the theoretical and practical issues associated with selected taxation topics and stimulate a critical evaluation of taxation policy used in those topic areas.
In particular, the course aims for students to:
develop an understanding, from an historical perspective, of the role of political economy in UK taxation.
develop an appreciation of the economic, legal and accounting aspects of taxation.
develop a working knowledge of those areas of taxation of most current practical importance.
develop analytical and problem-solving abilities in making tax planning decisions.
appreciate the inter-relationship of different taxes and their effects on business decisions.
develop technical expertise to produce tax computations.
