In joining the team, you would become part of one of the world\'s leading global scientific and medical publishers, with staff based in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. We have a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a passion for scientific advancement to develop their publishing career and work alongside some of the best in this field.

As an Associate Publisher/Publisher, you would be responsible for a defined list of journals within the Life Sciences team with a strong focus on Food Science, working as part of the team to grow the portfolio through strategic journal development and acquisitions. To develop the portfolio, you will enjoy being proactive, creative, and data-driven to devise and implement journal development plans. As the primary publishing contact for your journals, you will work alongside leading academics and policymakers, meaning excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships are key to ensuring the smooth running and success of the journal portfolio. Working with colleagues across the business you will gain exposure to all aspects of the academic journal publishing industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Editors-in-chief, Editorial Board members, society executives, and other stakeholders, with the aim of building and maintaining the journal\'s reputation.
  • Organize and host Editorial Board meetings.
  • Resolving queries and corresponding with Editors by email, phone, and in person, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated when required.
  • Build knowledge of the field and the relevant scientific communities to identify development opportunities and translate them into actions to maintain a competitive advantage. This will involve engaging with senior scientists and obtaining their advice.
  • Prioritize journals for development or maintenance in line with company strategy
  • Build excellent relationships and teamwork within the immediate team and other departments.
  • Monitor peer-review performance for the portfolio and assist colleagues in dealing with author queries or problem manuscripts.
  • Ensure that authors and reviewers who contact a journal receive appropriate support from the Publisher, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion (2 working days) and escalate when required.
  • Plan and drive the commissioning of content including pro-actively suggesting topics.
  • Support the management of the journals by being the primary contact for Editors and handling contract renewals.
  • Be familiar with COPE Guidelines to be able to advise on ethical queries, and ensure all journals comply with these.
  • Ensure correct filing of documents and correct data entry into relevant systems and databases to enable monitoring of agreement renewal dates, correct honoraria payments, and ensure all journal information (e.g. on website and marketing material) is kept up to date.
  • Represent the company at scientific conferences when required to improve market knowledge, network within the community, receive feedback on the journals, and promote Springer Nature journals and open access
Skills, experience and qualifications:
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, preferably with a scientific background
  • Interest and understanding of publishing business models (subscription, hybrid, open access)
  • Proven knowledge of the publishing process and related matters
  • Good knowledge of the publishing industry, ideally with previous experience managing the publishing workflow of scholarly content
  • Highly customer-focused
  • Proven administrative and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills
  • Excellent critical appraisal and problem-solving skills
  • Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines consistently
  • Ability to adapt quickly to change
  • Strong attention to detail/high accuracy
  • Proven high level of computer literacy

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Publisher: $60k - $70k / Publisher: $66,000 - $80,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
