To assist in providing and maintaining a high standard of nursing care under instruction from senior nursing staff.
Ensuring the privacy, dignity and comfort of the patients and being aware of personal needs.
Answering the telephone. Directing all enquiries to nurse in charge promptly.
Assisting members of ward team to keep the environment tidy (i.e. cupboards, sluice room).
To direct visitors to patients' bedside and direct all enquiries to nurse in charge.
To assist with escorting of patients to other wards or hospitals.
To help on other wards if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand.
To participate in activities involving patients where possible.
To take all measures to ensure safety of visitors, staff and patients. To report all incidents and accidents to nurse in charge and assist in completion of relevant forms.
To participate in the formulation and implementation of care plans and complete daily records as instructed.
To ensure equipment is used safely and report any unsafe equipment immediately.
Assist the registered nurses in the administration of medication following appropriate training.
General Duties
Make and change beds, ensuring rooms are clean and tidy.
Ensure the highest possible levels of care are maintained by supporting/assisting patients with washing, toileting, dressing, undressing and all other aspects of daily living.
Care of skin by washing of incontinent patients and prevention of pressure sores by regular turning and moving of patients, including the use of mechanical aids for these purposes.
Assist patients with all aspects of their care needs: physical, emotional and spiritual.
Giving and removing bedpans, urinals and commodes. Collection of specimens (urine, faeces and sputum).
Clean and maintain equipment used by patients, e.g. wheelchairs, hearing aids, spectacles etc.
Making patients comfortable for meals and assisting where necessary, i.e. feeding helpless patients, being aware of swallowing difficulties and dietary requirements.
Assisting with admission and discharge of patients, care of clothing and patients' property.
Assisting with delivery of care for dying patients. Assist with last offices.
Observing and reporting patients' condition promptly to nurse in charge.
Recording accurately fluid intake and output and recording accurately patients' weight in accordance with MUST guidelines.
To participate in training sessions and to attend staff meetings and discussions when required.
Pay rate dependant on experience and NVQ level - to be discussed at interview stage.
