The role
We are seeking to recruit a casual Catering Assistant to support our catering team in providing meals for patients 365 days per year. You will assist in all aspects of preparation and service of all meals to patients, considering special dietary needs and ensuring a clean and hygienic environment. Hours are to be arranged as and when required.
Skills and experience
Food Hygiene certificate. If out of date, online training can be provided
Experience of preparing, cooking and serving food
Approachable, trustworthy and a team player
An enhanced DBS clearance will be required for this role.

Role within the Department
The Bank Cook's role is to provide cover in the absence of the Cook. The role of the Cook is to assist the main cook of the day to provide meals for all patients. All cooks must ensure that all work within the kitchen is carried out according to Food Hygiene Regulations and in an efficient and timely manner. Consideration to special dietary needs of our patients is essential.
Function and ResponsibilitiesSpecific Objective

The post holder will be responsible for providing support to Cook's, as well as preparation of all meals and beverages to all the patients within Katharine House.
The post holder will be expected to prepare and cook all meals in the absence of
the Cook.
The post holder will maintain a clean and hygienic environment for all food
preparation and serving
The post holder will assist in supervision of the volunteers working in the kitchen.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Detailed below are areas of activity, which the post-holder is expected to carry out. The list is not comprehensive.
The post holder will:
1. Give consideration to special dietary needs of individual patients
2. Prepare ad hoc meals for patients as and when needed
3. Take menu orders for lunch from Day and In-Patient patients
4. Assist in preparation and cooking of all meals
5. Supervise the volunteers providing mid morning drinks
6. To prepare and serve all meals in the absence of the main cook
7. Temperature probe all high risk food and record evidence
8. Serve lunches to all patients ensuring that food, both hot and cold, is served at the appropriate temperature
9. Clear lunches and clean kitchen
10. Set up afternoon drinks trolley
11. Prepare tea for In-Patient unit
12. Serve afternoon drinks and snacks - both units
13. Prepare and serve evening meals for In-Patient unit (if covering the main cook)
14. Clear evening meals
15. Set up evening drinks trolley
16. Prepare trolley for breakfast the following day
17. Maintain a clean environment in all areas used for preparing and serving food
18. Maintain stock levels in kitchen and store, preparing purchase orders, monitoring and record keeping
19. Stock the Tuck Shop
20. Maintain Supplies in Staff Room for staff beverages
Other Tasks and Responsibilities
1. Ensure that Store Room and kitchen cupboards are kept in a clean and tidy condition
2. Cooks often work individually but frequently come into contact with all visitors to the hospice, members of the public, staff and patients. Cooks are expected to work in a courteous, friendly and appropriate manner with members of the hospice team, patients and members of the public.
3. All staff are required to understand the nature of confidentiality as it applies to information about staff and patients. Information must not be given to anyone, other than authorised personnel, if it relates in any way to matters considered confidential by Katharine House Hospice.
Health and Safety
1. All employees have a responsibility to abide by the safety practices and codes authorised by Katharine House Hospice and are responsible for maintaining safe working practices.
2. Cooks are required to report any Health and Safety issues to their line manager and are specifically responsible for Health and Safety in the kitchen.
