Job Title: Bereavement Officer

Hours: 37.5 hours per week



Working Pattern: Monday - Friday ( 9:00 - 17:00)



Duration: 1 Month



What you'll be responsible for:



Job Summary:



The candidate needs to be aware the office is located in the same area as the mortuary as this might not be suitable for everyone.

The candidate would be expected to speak on the phone to bereaved relatives and may encounter difficult conversations.

Full training and supervision will be provided.

You'll learn the following whilst working at the trust:



1. An in depth understanding of the roles and responsibilities involved in working within the NHS

2. Knowledge of the systems used, to effectively complete your role to the highest standard at all times

3. A sense of teamwork, gained through working alongside and supporting colleagues from all levels, within the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:



To provide comprehensive administration duties following the death of a patient ensuring legal requirements are met. To provide a professional and co-ordinated bereavement service to the relatives, carers, friends and legal representatives of patients who die in the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring that they are dealt with in an empathetic, caring, professional and timely manner. To act as a source of advice and knowledge for relatives of deceased patients, health care professionals and Coroner and Registration services
Clinical

To communicate in a clear, calm and compassionate manner as the post holder will deal with a range of highly charged emotions and an equally wide range of people and needs on a daily basis. To maintain a professional attitude and demonstrate emotional composure in a potentially distressing and emotionally draining working environment. To communicate and liaise with both internal e.g. Doctors, nursing staff etc. and a wide range of external agencies including the Coroner and his Officers, the Police, Registrar's of Births, Deaths and Marriages, other NHS Trusts, General Practitioners and their staff, executors of the deceased, funeral directors and Foreign Embassies when a deceased person's wish is to be repatriated. Manage complex multi faith, multi-cultural and diverse relationships in a highly emotionally charged environment with people who may have no knowledge of the UK Death Certification process. To maintain confidentiality at all times. Use departmental IT systems for data entry and demonstrate working knowledge of the Data Protection Act and Trust policies relating to confidentiality. Review case notes to ascertain identity of Qualified Attending Practitioner (QAP) eligible to complete the Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCD). Organise timely meetings between the QAP and the Medical Examiner (ME) to ensure MCCD and associated paperwork is completed correctly and accurately. Book appointments and conduct hospital viewings on deceased patients as per Trust and departmental policies. Full Training will be provide

Very good level of computer literacy
Experience:

Demonstrable experience in an admin role with knowledge of office procedures. Experience of working with bereaved families or working with people in sensitive and emotional situations Skills. Knowledge & Abilities: Knowledge of software packages e.g. Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel Very good telephone manner Ability to exercise own initiative and judgement Ability to work both as part of a team and individually Very good time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
