Summary of Position:
The Bereavement Service Coordinator provides direct support for professionals, parents, and carers to help them support a child or young person through their grief. This can be raw, immediate grief. The post holder will do this by listening, assessing, and determining appropriate support tailored to the individual's needs.
ACBS run a helpline for bereaved families and therefore we require the post holder to work an element of fixed ours each week, to comply with the advertised "open" Information Line service. There is an occasional need to work at weekends and/or evenings for activity days/to attend meetings, etc. therefore flexibility is essential.
Primary Responsibilities
Initial Response and Referral
Provide the first response in a process of delivering a program of support for bereaved children and young people. This may be via telephone call or email.
Report regularly on all aspects of Archie Child Bereavement Service in line with the Finance & Governance committee and Trustee Board requirements.
Assist The Archie Foundation to develop local services and ensure these services are signposted appropriately.
Assist the charity to raise awareness of ACBS and The Archie Foundation organisation and the needs of bereaved children and young people.
Maintain all record keeping requirement in accordance with the organisation's Data Protection/GDPR policy.
Develop and manage systems that will support and supervise volunteers.
Attend regular supervision with the nominated manager from ACBS Committee.
Volunteer and Activities Co-ordination
Assist the organisation to build a network of volunteers who can respond to support children and young people who have been bereaved by:
developing and managing the volunteer programme.
co-ordinating the recruitment and selection and retention of volunteers in line with The Archie Foundation volunteer policy, this includes the safe screening processes (Disclosure Scotland).
assisting with training of volunteers to ensure they can undertake required tasks, including: responding to training requests; liaising with trainers; dealing with venue, and training bookings; and responding to Bereavement Support Consultation requests.
co-ordinating the organisation and implementation of agreed activities with volunteers e.g., activity days, responder visits and training.
setting up systems and provide support and supervision to volunteers.
raising awareness of the work of ACBS and the needs of bereaved children and young people.
Key Internal and External Relationships
Internal
Works closely with all volunteers to maintain effective and professional relationships. Identifying when and where additional support is required.
Maintain close working relationships with the Archie Foundation staff group to call on support when and where required.
External
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with patients, and care givers.
Personal Specification
Knowledge and Experience
Experience of bereavement issues and supporting others through the grieving process. Strong assessment skills.
Experience of working with children, young people, and their families.
Knowledge of child development.
Experience of recruiting, managing, and training volunteers.
Coordination and delivery of services with great organisational skills.
Good IT skills and how systems can improve overall service provided.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication skills ability to assess, develop and interact with a wide range of people.
Ability to plan workload and work under pressure, dealing with more than one person / task at a time.
Ability to maintain accurate administration systems and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work flexibly including occasional evening / weekend hours.
Ability to report to / ACBS Committee and The Archie Foundation Management Team.
