We are looking for a highly skilled Bookkeeper with strong experience in construction sector finance, particularly CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) returns, subcontractor payments, and VAT compliance. This is a key role within our team and would suit someone confident, accurate, and able to manage end-to-end bookkeeping with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day bookkeeping, including all entries, reconciliations, and journals
Handle CIS processes: subcontractor verification, CIS deductions, and monthly CIS submissions
Prepare and file VAT returns, ensuring full compliance with HMRC
Process purchase invoices, sales invoices, payments, and receipts
Maintain accurate ledgers and manage cashflow reporting
Reconcile bank accounts, supplier statements, and credit card accounts
Support payroll preparation
Assist with month-end reports and liaise with external accountants
Keep financial records audit-ready and well-organised
Requirements
Proven experience as a Bookkeeper within the construction industry
Strong understanding of CIS rules and HMRC submissions
Solid experience with VAT, including reverse charge VAT for construction (advantageous)
Competent with accounting software (Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, or similar)
Strong Excel skills
Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to prioritise, work independently, and manage multiple tasks
Confident communicating with suppliers, subcontractors, and project teams
Desirable
AAT Level 3/4 or equivalent
Experience managing retentions and applications for payment
Strong knowledge of construction costings and project tracking
