About the Role
North Yorkshire Council is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Building Control Technical Lead to join our Planning Service. This is a pivotal role in shaping the future of our Building Control team, supporting the development of professionals, and ensuring compliance with building regulations across a diverse range of projects.
You will lead the delivery of a professional development programme, supervise a cohort of new recruits, and provide expert guidance to ensure buildings across North Yorkshire meet the highest standards in safety, sustainability, accessibility, and design.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and deliver a Building Control professional development programme.
Supervise and mentor Building Control surveyors.
Provide technical advice and support on major corporate projects.
Oversee inspections and plan checks for compliance with Building Regulations and the Building Act 1984.
Respond to dangerous structures and lead emergency callouts.
Support enforcement actions and statutory duties.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure seamless service delivery.
Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with health and safety and equal opportunities policies.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
Extensive experience in Building Control across a range of project types.
Excellent knowledge of construction methods, Building Regulations, and local government procedures.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to coach and mentor others.
Degree in Building Control, Surveying, Construction, or related field.
Corporate membership of RICS, CABE, CIOB or equivalent.
Registered with the Building Safety Regulator (Class 2f minimum).
Desirable:
Working towards Class 3: Specialist Building Inspector registration.
Additional qualifications in Fire Safety or Structural Engineering.
Experience in supervising and developing teams.

The basic salary for the post is from 47,181 to 51,356 plus a market supplement of 6,000 per annum, providing an annual salary package of up to 57,356.
For the right candidate, a recruitment welcome payment of up to 10% of starting salary may be payable as a one-off welcome payment.
