ROLE OVERVIEW



As Grade II Listed Buildings & Facilities Manager, you'll take the lead on the care, maintenance, and day-to-day operation of our historic venue, a unique space that blends heritage character with modern performance, event, and hospitality experiences.

You'll ensure the building runs safely and efficiently, balancing the needs of a busy live events and food & beverage environment with the specialist requirements of listed building conservation.

KEY OBJECTIVES & RESPONSIBILITIES



1. Building & Heritage Management



Oversee the upkeep and conservation of the Grade II listed venue, ensuring all works comply with heritage and planning requirements. Lead on maintenance, restoration, and refurbishment projects, sourcing specialist contractors where traditional materials and methods are required. Work closely with conservation officers, architects, and local authorities to obtain listed building consents. Maintain detailed asset records, building condition surveys, and maintenance logs.

2. General Maintenance & Repairs



Carry out basic repairs and upkeep across the venue -- including carpentry, painting, plumbing, and electrical tasks. Fix doors, locks, fittings, furniture, and stage or dressing room equipment. Replace bulbs, signage, and fittings in public and performance areas. Maintain F&B areas, bars, and kitchens -- ensuring equipment and fixtures remain in safe working order.

3. Event Support & Venue Readiness



Prepare spaces for events, performances, and private hires -- setting up furniture, staging, barriers, or temporary installations & the management of our loading bay. Respond quickly to on-the-day maintenance issues during events (e.g. lighting faults, leaks, or access problems). Work closely with the production, operations, and events teams to ensure smooth event delivery, Assist with post-event resets and turnarounds between shows.

4. Preventative & Planned Maintenance



Conduct regular building audits and report maintenance issues. Carry out basic compliance tasks such as emergency lighting checks, weekly fire alarm tests, fire door inspections, and equipment servicing support. Assist with seasonal maintenance programmes and small refurbishment projects. Ensure backstage, plant rooms, and storage areas are kept safe and well organised.

5. Health, Safety & Compliance



Work safely and follow venue health & safety procedures at all times. Ensure work areas are left clean, tidy, and hazard-free. Report defects, hazards, or near-misses to the Operations Manager. Use tools and access equipment (ladders, lifts, power tools) in accordance with training and safety standards.

6. Contractor & Stakeholder Management



Manage supplier relationships and service contracts (security, cleaning, waste, maintenance, etc.). Lead tendering and procurement for building and facilities services. Build strong relationships with heritage bodies, local authorities, and venue partners.

7. Budgeting & Sustainability



Develop and manage facilities and maintenance budgets. Identify and implement cost efficiencies and sustainability initiatives (energy reduction, recycling, and responsible sourcing). Plan long-term maintenance and capital improvements in line with the venue's strategic vision.

8. Working Environment



A varied, hands-on role in a vibrant live events setting. Mix of routine maintenance and reactive problem-solving. Involves both front-of-house (public) and back-of-house (operational) work. Requires flexibility around performance schedules and event setups.

ABOUT YOU



Essential Skills & Experience



Practical, multi-skilled background (basic carpentry, painting, plumbing & electrical qualifications/awareness). Strong problem-solving and "get it done" attitude. Comfortable working under pressure and to tight turnarounds. Good communication and teamwork skills. Driving Licence, own vehicle & selection of tools desirable. Pride in presentation and attention to detail, especially in public areas. Flexible and adaptable, able to switch between maintenance and event support tasks.

Typical Requirements



Previous experience in a maintenance or handyman role, ideally within a venue, hotel, theatre, or public building. Knowledge of building maintenance and basic compliance routines. Experience using hand and power tools safely. Awareness of health & safety procedures and safe working at height. Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours to support live events.

Working Pattern



This is an on-site role, with flexibility required around the live events schedule, including evenings and weekends. The role may involve physical inspections, working at height, or in confined spaces as required.

Manchester's iconic New Century Hall was transformed in 2022 after a 10m restoration and build. "New Century" is home to a live music, performance and events space; an eclectic mix of independent kitchens, and a creative college. The venue opened in summer 2022 and is located between Victoria Station and Shudehill, right at the heart of one of central Manchester's best connected areas, the 20 acre NOMA neighbourhood.

This remarkable Grade II listed building has been reborn as a new social destination spread across three floors, all of which will focus on nurturing talent, developing skills and creating new opportunities. Each aspect of the New Century ecosystem will complement one another with aptitude, education, live events and hospitality industries coming together to create an exciting new community for Manchester.

On the ground floor, seating up to 300 people, the beating social heart of New Century are its kitchens.

hosts independent food operators.. A central bar and an entertainment space create a constantly evolving social hub that's full of energy from morning through to night. A vibrant menu of the best independent food from the most exciting culinary talent sit alongside local beers, wines, a creative cocktail menu and artisan coffees.. The space is designed to inspire creativity and collaboration - a meeting place where the best food, drink and ideas flow. New Century Kitchen spills outside onto Sadler's Yard for al fresco dining, drinking and regular events.
